Splenda is the recommended artificial sweetener for Atkins.
According to "the rules" you can have up to three servings of artificial sweetener per day. Each serving has 1 gram carb and must be counted toward your daily intake. The only zero carb artificial sweetener is the liquid version. The powdered stuff has maltodextrin in it for bulk, so it can be measured. Straight Splenda is SO concentrated that one serving of it wouldn't be measureable, that's why they add maltodextrin... which is a carbohydrate. In case you don't quite believe me... http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/sweets/9252/2 FYI, 1 cup of Splenda (the bulk kind that you use for baking) has 96 calories.... and 24 grams carbohydrate. Not exactly a "calorie free sweetener" now, is it? |
