Hey FrogAttack, tell me a little about the gazelle. From what I gather it moves your arms and legs in a skiing motion. Are their ways to make the resistance more or less, does it do a good job of giving you a tiring cardio workout? Does it have a distance monitor so you can see how far you went? I'm asking because my stationary recumbant is dying and I'm looking around and I saw an infomercial for the gazelle and got intrigued, and because its cheap.

I have a Total Gym, I think I paid around $200 for it. I like it alot, have not had any problems with it, and it is great for an all over workout in a pinch. I can also integrate my pilates workout with it, on top of the resistance training that it was originally designed for. I find it does seem to lack in the cardio unless you are really doing it fast.. which is really how you're supposed to do it.

thanx for the suggestions!
FA - do you find that you get enough resistance on the gazelle? are they comfortable to use? i have seen those machines around and often wondered if they are any good. I am glad to hear some positive things about them because they are very cheap so i guess i was skeptical. i love the fact that it folds up too! there are several different models - do you know what the differences are? what model do you have? i also really like the fact that it works both upper and lower body...and is low impact...hmmm...i will definitely have to check this out. thanx for the input! |

Hmmm... I guess the model I have is the cheapest one, because I see they;ve got ones now with cupholders and stuff... No you cannot adjust the resistance on mine.
It tells you DISTANCE, CALORIES, SPEED, and TIME. I do have to confess one thing though. Because of the gliding motion you may have a tendency to lock your knees because it makes gliding easier but if you do this you'll start getting weird pains on the sides of your knee. As long as you rememeber to keep your knees bent it's okay but I remember when I first started out this happened and I had to step back and see what I was doing wrong. It was locking the knees. Anyway, I really do like it. Yes it's cheap but it's just metal and plastic and like I said I've never had any problems and it's great if you just need something to do in the mornings or if you want to walk a little more while watching TV or something. |

its a body rider, which is close to an elliptical...kinda a cross between an elliptical and a bike. the motion is elliptical, but there is a big wheel on front. kinda hard to explain i guess, but it was a cheap no-good machine that I have wasted a lot of time on!
as for budget...dont really have a figure in mind. I only spent around 250 on this thing, figured that I would try it and if it sucked then i could always return it. so, it does suck, and now I am fed up enough with it to find plan B. I would prefer not to spend more than $1000...I am more concerned with finding a good machine then anything else though. any suggestions would be great! |

Yes I'm a big supporter of The Gazelle. We got ours from Walmart.com for under 100 dollars. Had it a ayear and half and NO PROBLEMS. Had to oil it a few times in the beginning because of the squeaking but since then it's pretty quiet. You can get up to the equivalent of 6.4 mph at least that's the highest I can get and sustain gliding. It works your legs differently than just jogging because you aren't picking up your legs youi are gliding. Kid of like walking in skis a little bit. You can fold it up and prop it against the wall. They have models with cup holders and stuff but we just have the basic one. I use it in two ways, one is the mornings for my "serious" half-hour of cardio and the other is maybe I need some extra activity so I'll take an easy 2 hour walk on it while watching a movie or TV.
Check it out, I love mine. |

I've heard people mention the Gazelle as a good affordable machine. I haven't used it tho.
I got a treamill from Walmart for about $400, which I really like. This brand is sold elsewhere, but it seems that this model is exclusive to Walmart. I see that they now have a higher model for about $100 more. They also have the Gazelle. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...%3A4134%3A5151 |

OK, so I bought a Body Rider back in the fall, and have had nothing but problems with it since (missing parts, now has this horrid noise that sounds like its going to fall apart). I will admit that I have not used it too many times, but the thing was a total waste of money and I am going to return it as it hasnt worked good once!
So, my question is, what is a good machine to buy? I dont have a whole lot of money to spend, which is why I went with the Body Rider to begin with, but I am looking for something that is not too expensive yet gives a good all-over cardio workout. Any suggestions? |
