Here is an extract of an article which I read lately:
Herbal and dietary supplements are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration as food rather than drugs, so they don't have to meet the same safety and efficacy standards as prescription drugs or over-the-counter medications. You should always tell your health-care provider about everything you are taking, because some alternative or herbal products can interfere with prescription medications. In recent years, more physicians have been encouraging their patients to use supplements when there is proof that they work. Your doctor is also likely to know the most effective dose for you.

I had horrible sinus problems. I went to see a nutritionist who suggested taking a multi vitamin, vitamin C and Vitamin E

I have yet to have one major sinusitus attack since. and I used to get them a couple of times a year at a minimum as I have allergies.

so I am 100 % convinced for some it can make a difference. No I will admit I also do not have good eating habits.

The only Vitamins I take are Prenatal. And they are recommended because of Folic acid that most women don't consume enough of.

At the end of the day, multivitamins are designed to flood your system with a large excess of what your body can absorb, ergo your body takes what it needs from them. So if you don't have a vitamin rich diet then they will help. If you have a vitamin rich diet they just provide top ups. For most people you just end up pissing out 70/80% of what you put in!

Personally if i get a cold i find Vit C helps, if i'm hungover a multivitamin drink rehydrates, balances electrolytes and tops up and acute deficiencys, so while in whole they are pretty useless they have they're time and place!!

Vitamin supplements don't fight cancer, studies show

A series of trials also shows that taking vitamins and minerals has no effect on preventing strokes, heart disease or other ailments. In some cases, they can even cause harm. More........
