I have a question about soy sauce. Other posts have said that it can't be used because it has wheat in it and therefore is a no-no, but the Melba toast that we're allowed to have is made with wheat, right? That doesn't seem logical to me at all. Heck, a piece of Melba has a lot more wheat and calories in it than a tablespoon of soy sauce. I know the soy sauce is really high in sodium and can cause problems with water retention, but the wheat part of it just doesn't make sense to me.
Thoughts???? Thanks, Andi |

I know the soy sauce is really high in sodium and can cause problems with water retention, but the wheat part of it just doesn't make sense to me. For me I would avoid it completely, as I avoid anything not specifically spoken to in Dr. Simeons' protocol, but I'm a complete stickler and would not wish to go through this many days of discomfort and risk it for anything. That's just me, but there's 1000s of posts here with people that disagree with me. Dr. Simeons even addresses it in P&I: "The most tiresome patients are those who start counting Calories and then come up with all manner of ingenious variations which they compile from their little books. When one has spent years of weary research trying to make a diet as attractive as possible without jeopardizing the loss of weight, culinary geniuses who are out to improve their unhappy lot are hard to take." So even in the 50s there were people trying to make this an easier experience. Personally I say embrace the bland, and teach yourself now that health supersedes taste. That's just my 2.1 cents though, your mileage may vary. |

I haven't tried it and i don't plan on it... I've stuck to protocol for 23 days now and have been fine... the only adjustments being on a few days when I was going hiking I'd add a bit more approved protein than usual. I've been able to have broccoli as my veggie several times with no bad effects and no stall or change in weight loss. I know it's not on the original diet, but from reading it seems like a lot of people are successful with broccoli.
I was just curious about the soy sauce and the reasoning behind it. I don't want to try it out and jeopardize how well I've done thus far... it was just simple curiosity ![]() |

I haven't tried it and i don't plan on it... My personal rational comes from the fact that I am a person that is not good at moderation, so I'm a fan of anything I can lock in without needing to worry about it too much (that's why P2 so was so much nicer than P3 for me, even though P2 is so crazily bland and restrictive). Following Dr. Simeons' protocol (that works) is not only the safest route (I think I would cry if a simple change I made to ease my burden negated the benefit I could have gained from sticking to P&I as canon), but it also leaves time to go off and do other things that have nothing to do with food in the hopes of resetting one's relationship with food. Speaking as to the why...not sure, maybe soy was not as readily accessible, or was too expensive, or fermented white beans become evil when they darken, or the salt content, or the need for a specific carb, or Dr. Simeons owned stock in grissino bread ![]() |

Speaking of grissino bread, where can it be bought? I've never seen it, have even had a hard time finding Melba toast a few times. Both Melba and Grissani are wheat products, so if you think you might have a previously-unsuspected wheat problem, skip it. Some people substitute a rice cracker of the same calories. Soy sauce is iffy because of soy and sodium. With all these things, stick to the protocol as much as possible. If you still have problems, look deeper. But, IMO, wheat is a major culprit in addition to sugar and grains. P2 and P3/4 are great times to find out if anything you eat is a problem for you. |

Thanks.... I'm not having any problems with the Melba toast, and some days don't have any at all. It would be nice, though, to try the grissini bread for a bit of variety.
I was just curious as to why soy sauce was not allowed on the hcg diet, sounds like its a combo of the wheat/soy/sodium. Oh well, a girl can dream right? I've done too good thus far to mess it up now ![]() |
