Default FYI !!!-magnesium Citrate
I just wanted to let you all know, I drank the magnesium citrate (saline laxative) b/c I haven't been regular in like a week. I know alot of people say we shouldn't take anything, but I felt I had to. Well...be careful if you do it b/c about 2 hrs after I took it, I was in the bathroom every 10 minutes for like an hour, and not to give too much info, but everything was coming out like water, ALOT. Then during the night, I got up a couple of times, then again when I got up in the morning and again when I was out shopping!!!! Needless to say, it obviously gets things moving, but don't do it if you are not going to be VERY close to a bathroom!!!! It was actually kind of scary. Not sure if it works the same on everyone, but I felt I should give you all a heads up, just in case anyone was considering trying it!

T-- I know what you mean. I just took a correctol and had the same problem. I think I'll just suffer with constipation from now on. But I didn't have this problem in P2. only with 3 &4.

I needed to get things moving too, my pharmacist told me magnesium citrate would make me go like NOW--he even called it the bomb! I chickened out and bought castor oil instead. It was nasty getting it down, but I gotta say it worked.
ps. I stayed home near my washroom

Hi Macy,
yeh, it was the bomb alright, not sure if it was a good thing or bad!!! The magnesium citrate was nasty getting down. I even put it in the freezer, just to get it REALLY cold, I still was only able to get down about 5 1/2 ounces and it said 6.75-10. Guess it was a good thing I didn't get it all down, I'd still be going! Next time, if there is one that I am this desperate, I am not sure what I will do!

Sorry T, but you made me laugh Hope you never have to go through that anymore!! Hats off to you for actually downing 5.5 ozs, when the guy showed me the bottle and told me I had to drink the entire thing, I got sick to my stomach! Maybe you could try the castor oil if you needed to, it works without the works--if ya know what I mean, lol.
LOL!

Hi Macy,
When I hear castor oil it makes me think of the little rascals or one of those old episodes where the kids had to take teaspoons of that stuff, LOL! Yeh, the Mag Citrate was NASTY! It's OK to laugh, I was in shock, LOL! Hopefully I can just tough it out the next time !!!

I must say I took 400mg (2 tablets) of Mag Citrate and it got things moving about an hour later...not like you T but I did take one more about 10 minutes ago...I wouldn't be upset if in the next hour or so I have to go running to the bathroom. I have to ask...did you lose any weight?lol

Well, I was down 2 more lbs this morning, wether that is what did it? It had to have helped, that's for sure! Where did you find the tablets? I couldn't, so I had to buy the liquid, it was gross getting down! But taking the liquid could have been another reason why I had to go the way I did and the fact that it was like water coming out (sorry if TMI, LOL)

Maybe instead of a laxative you could just try a stool softener (like they gave me after I had my kids and came home from the hospital.) It's supposed to make things move easier - i didn't have any urgency or consistancy problems with it and things just went smoothly....maybe that would work better?
I haven't had enough problems to take anything, so I am just sharing the thought that came to me as I was reading about your dilema.

guys, I think I posted this elsewhere on the forum, but mag citrate is used as a bowel prep for surgery and procedures. It is not just a laxative, it is intended to completely clean out the bowel. It does literally "blast" stuff out of you ... LOL. Please use with caution. If using the liquid, you don't need the whole bottle if your problem is constipation, try a quarter of a bottle.

Hi All

I totally agree with ILUVKATS
Now for some people like Grammy Mag Citrate it is fine for her but I think she uses a powder form?????

Just consider the following......

Mag Citrate and Mag Glycinate are both forms of Magnesium.
Magnesium citrate is used as a laxative, Magnesium glycinate is a highly absorbable form of this mineral . Both have excellent properties for the body.
Mag citrate: Is sold in liquid form in most drug stores, you can get pills from various vitamin companies on line.
Mag Glycinate is sold in pill form I have ordered it on line because it is not easy to find.

Why Use Magnesium Glycinate Instead Of Other Forms Of Magnesium?
Magnesium glycinate is easier on the bowel. Other forms of magnesium tend to be more disruptive to the bowel. Magnesium oxide tends to firm stools (leading to constipation), whereas the citrate, sulphate and chloride forms tend to loosen the stools (diarrhea). Magnesium glycinate is gentler, with less chance of bowel disruptions.
Magnesium glycinate is highly absorbable.

Everything we do, or experience, is up for debate especially all the medications mainstream and alternative, all you can do is be as informed as possible. I do a lot of research and then try to make an intelligent decision as to what to ingest or what to do. That is why this board is so awesome, there are a lot of opinions based on scientific fact and what people have actually experienced. Take it all in, sort it out and do what is best for you. The most important thing is if you have pre existing conditions be more careful and do more research before taking anything. Even the Magnesiums have contraindications for some people.

BTW there is also a tea called "Smooth Move" but I haven't used it

I was also advised by the protocol from my dr to use 2 tbsp of epsom salt in a glass of warm water...and this works just as well and is cheap...I lost 6.4 lbs after my loading days by using this cleanse..I have done it since and lost around a lb each time...It is very liquidy (sorry)..but it works.

I got the pills for mag citrate and now I'm afraid to take them. Perhaps it is the liquid mag citrate that makes things go wild???? Should I only try one of the pills for mag citrate just to get things going but not to put me permanent in the potty?

I took 400mg of Mag citrate in the pill form yesterday when I got home from work and about 2 hours later I was in the bathroom. Wasn't explosive or anything was just a regular BM although wasn't as productive as I would have liked...so I took 1 more last night before bed and it hasn't affected me. Sorry if too graphic!
