Default What happens when a man doesn't lose much?
Hi! I was wondering - my husband and I started the diet the same time. I have lost 8lbs (and only have 15 to go to goal) since last Wednesday and my husband has 20# till goal, and has only lost 6#'s. He's definitely not losing much. He's a construction worker, and said he does feel hungry sometimes - so I upped his protein to 5oz.. but since then he has only been losing 1/4# - 1/2#. I'm confused since I thought it would melt off of him! He hasn't cheated either. Do you have any advice what could be up? If he doesn't lose more soon - he's going to give up. This is the first diet he has ever been on!
Thank you!
Danella

If he is not getting enough water, especially due to his job, that could be a factor.

Remember there is nothing else you can do to lose 6-8 lbs in less than a week!! That is REALLY good!

I told him to make sure he's getting enough - he's drinking 2.5 liters.

If he only has 20lbs to reach goal, that might be the issue.
If you will notice on the other threads people that are losing more have a much higher BMI and a lot more total to lose.
Once you get closer to your goal weight, you start losing less per day.
If he is hitting .5lbs a day and only has 20 to go, he is doing very very good.

I also agree with the water, when I do not drink enough, my losses slow down

Jonathan - he's 42, height 5.7", and he started at 194#. He is very muscular and big boned... for instance - he is that short by wears size 11 shoes. He weighed 170 when he was 21 and looked skinny. His cholestrol was over 300 the last we checked - which is why he needs to lose.

Update - he was up 1/4# this morning. I'm afraid he's going to get discouraged. It's been hard for him!

My husband is also on hcg with me this round and he is not losing as fast as I thought he would. He feels hungry and is quite bad tempered lately. I'll be interested in hearing what others think...

so if you are trying to control cholesterol i woudl say you need to focus on cholesterol.

what are his numbers?

he may benefit from P2 but it doesnt sound like he is out of shape if he is really dense/strong. So he may see other things than what he wants to accomplish happening

the right tool for the job i say :-)

A lot of big guys need a bit more protein to get things moving in the right direction. If he is really not cheating, and following protocol, then maybe he should add more protein and see what that does. I've never heard of anyone who actually follows the protocol and gains, unless they are having an edema issue (severe water retention). In which case, that is also helped by adding a bit more protein, possibly a potassium supplement, and 64 to 100 oz of water per day. And don't completely cut out salt when drinking that much water! Also, severe edema is indicative of visit to a doctor, pronto.

I thought he needed more protein too - so I had upped it to 5oz each meal. He didn't lose and even gained that little bit. So yesterday I was very strict with just 4oz.. he got extremely weak in the afternoon.. total low blood sugar crash. BUT was down 1# this morning. Today we were strict with the protein again - and he's feeling better than yesterday. So hopefully he'll see a loss again tomorrow.

I have totally stalled now. Maybe that will encourage him. I think it was hard on him with me losing 1-2 lbs every morning. haha!

If he was skinny at 170 it sounds like he's at a pretty good weight now. He does not need to lose weight to lower his cholesterol he needs to change his diet, that doesn't have to include weight loss and hcg since he's at a good weight for his build. Look into a plan that will lower his cholesterol without the severe restrictions of HCG for him. HCG won't work if he's at a healthy weight already, he's just going to be miserable.

as a similar age male (43), i have found no consistancy to my losses. there will be a day or two a week with a stall/small gain, but its always corrected within a few days. Seems like 4-5 lbs a week after the first week is my "sweet spot". You cant pay too much attention to a small period of time.

Just an update - he lost 14#'s! I'm so proud of him. I lost 8#'s. Not that great for 3 weeks of HCG - but at least it is down. But I am finding the first few days off here - very touchy.. much more than last.. gaining easily. In fact - today is my first steak day ever.

Were you only on hcg for 3 weeks? The minimum time is 23 days and 30 is usually more stable.
