Wow that is a very powerful meal there jill_ca! It's definitely fun to lose weight if you eat healthy and reap the good health benefits from it. Breakfast is definitely the most important meal of the day since it will boost our energy and at the same time our metabolism

This is a very helpful post kathy! Thanks for posting this as this will be a basis for our members on how to cut down on calories from our breakfast. Some of us don't know how to count calories and some are also tired of doing that . Thanks for helping us know how we can cut down on our calories without sacrificing taste and amount of food that we can eat

I love bagels and cream cheese so much. Sometimes I also use fat free cottage cheese. I couldn't finish the whole bagel so I guess I'm alright . When I eat cereals for breakfast, I use whole grain cereals and non fat milk. It's not as tasty as fresh milk or whole milk but it's definitely as healthy and guilt free!

Yes, mornings are crazy. But they’re also our best hope at regaining our nutritional sanity. A 2005 study synthesized the results of 47 other studies that examined the impact of starting the day with a healthy breakfast. Here’s what they found:

People who skip breakfast are more likely to take up smoking or drinking, less likely to exercise, and more likely to follow fad diets or express concerns about body weight. Common reasons cited for skipping were lack of time, lack of hunger, or dieting.

Bad news. Sure, it would seem to make sense that skipping breakfast means eating fewer calories, which means weighing less. But it doesn’t work that way. Consider:

People who eat breakfast tend to have higher total calorie intakes throughout the day, but they also get significantly more fiber, calcium, and other micronutrients than skippers do. Breakfast eaters also tended to consume less soda and French fries and more fruits, vegetables, and milk.

Breakfast eaters were approximately 30 percent less likely to be overweight or obese. (Think about that people who eat breakfast eat more food, but weigh less!)

I definitely agree with you StayHealthy! A few years back when I was dieting, I usually skip breakfast before of that same mentally that I will lose weight faster because I consume lesser calories. However, I used to overeat during lunch time and tend to munch on junk foods to fill me up. I do lose weight but I became more sickly and have lesser energy.

I think most dieters are as guilty of skipping breakfast because we think that it is a faster way of losing weight. I have done it a few times and I have to say that it didn't do me any good. You indeed lose weight but you will gain them all back if once your body craves too much because of hunger. I changed my diet plan now and added a few serving of fruits and vegetables, and I have to say that I feel a lot healthier.

I am guilty of skipping breakfast as well but not for the purpose of dieting but because I often over sleep causing me to leave without eating my breakfast. However I bring with me granola bars or oatmeal cookies to fill me up and have coffee when I get to work. I know it's not as healthy but I think that's better than not eating anything at all. I will do better next time

Default Healthy Breakfast
Here are some ways to cut 100 calories from your breakfast diet:
  • Drink only nonfat or 1% milk instead of whole milk.
  • Use only a small bowl whenever you're eating cereal and only a small glass when you drink your juice.
  • Instead of a sweet roll, try to substitute eating bananas, berries, low-fat milk as well as sugar substitute instead.
  • Go for light yogurt that's made with a no-calorie sweetener. You’ll be able to see that the taste isn’t that much different from that of regular sweetened yogurt.
  • Eat only half a bagel and give the other half to someone else or better yet, leave it for tomorrow's breakfast.
  • Make it a habit to use a no-calorie sweetener in all of your teas, juices and cereal. There are a lot of good products out there that can take the place of regular refined sugar. You might want to look at Splenda sweetener which will enable you maintain the sweetness of your desserts and beverages but will give you zero of the calories you used to get.
  • Get a non-stick skillet and cooking spray instead of butter or margarine to prepare your eggs. One tends to smear a lot of butter and margarine
  • Use fat-free cream cheese instead of regular cream cheese when eating your muffins, toast and bagels.
  • Substitute no-sugar-added jelly or jam for those other rich varieties
  • Go for lean ham or Canadian bacon instead of regular ham or bacon.
  • Eat an omelette which has onions, peppers, mushrooms and spinach instead of meat and cheese
  • Make your omelette light by using 1/2 cup egg substitute or 4 egg whites.

Hello Kathy. Thanks for these great tips. I think Breakfast is the most important meal of the day since we start off our day with it. A healthy breakfast should be energetic. Since I'm trying to shed some pounds, I make sure my breakfast is low on calories and yet nutritious and protien rich. Since I'm a working mom with a really hectic schedule, I don't cook at home. I have been using Bistro MD diet meals which they deliver to my door and I've lost a lot of weight with it. Some of the breakfast items they send are - Protien bagel served with cream cheese, English muffins with turkey sausages and egg whites, Danish pastries, Buckwheat pancakes and Vanilla Walnut Protein Muffin.
