I've been doing Atkins diet since Jan '09. I'm a 41 year old female. I've lost 21lbs so far but haven't lost any weight in the past month and I've NOT changed my diet not one bit. Still eating about 20 grams of carbs everyday. Somedays I may not be eating even 20. I am not sure what to do to get the weight loss moving again. I've got about 80 more lbs to lose. I typically eat a boiled egg and 3 slices of bacon in the AM; I eat sliced turkey breast for lunch with a boiled egg and 1 string cheese, for dinner I eat grilled chicken breast with a salad (which includes bacon bits, 1 boiled egg, shredded cheese, & LOW CARB 1gram Ken's Balsamic Dressing about 2 T). I drink my 8-8oz bottles of water daily too. Sometimes I have caffeine free diet Ginger Ale too. Probably haven't been exercising as much as I should, but I did Atkins diet back in 2004-05 and lost 62 lbs easily in about 7 months and I don't recall that I did all that much exercise then. As I recall, the weight loss was kinda slow at first and then picked up in the last 3-4 months before I reached the 62 lbs. I am just frustrated right now and need to see some results. I have too much to lose to give up now. I'm committed and will stick with LOW CARB, but I do need to get the scales to moving in the right direction. I've NOT gained any weight in the last month, seems to be holding steady on the scale, but it's certainly stalled out at 21 lbs lost. I just want to get over this plateau/stall and start doing better. If any one who's experienced this in their low carb diet could reply to my question and give me some suggestions or ideas that might help me get back on track--I'd be ever so grateful. Thanks so much for your help!!

ddm, I know this won't help much, but if it is any consolation, I have known several people, myself included, that hit a major platteau after losing 22 pounds. I know we are all different height/weight, but for some reason, that seems to be a critical point. Almost like your body figures out what you are doing and fights back (I know, not very scientifiic).
I was stuck at that stall for about a month. I have no real advice. I think all I did was mix up the diet a bit and try to move a little more. I find that for me anyway, my metabolism was slowing down and I think my body figured out how to make the most out of the calories it was taking in. Anyway, good luck. I know we've all been there and it is so frustrating. |

Okay, you stared 2 months ago, and you didn't lose any weight last month. So the first month you dropped over 20 lbs. Wow! My guess is that your body demands are balanced with your nutrient intake. It may be time to mix up those meals a bit!
Please don't forget your vitamins along with 12-15 carbs a day of veg. And yes, you need the exercise if your metabolism has slowed down. Congrats on keeping off the weight and write often. It's always nice to know you aren't alone in your quest. LL |

Thanks to everyone who replied to my question. I just guess I've hit a plateau for now and do need to change things up a bit to get the scale moving again. I basically eat just a salad and don't eat other acceptable veggies, I like brocolli too so I'll start eating some of that. Guess I need to introduce at least 1 veggie into my diet. I think sometimes that I'm not eating enough carbs each day either so that possibly might be causing a stall. Don't know if that makes sense or not but when I did Atkins/low carb before back in '04-'05, I stalled out early on too and seems like when I started to eat more carbs--the weight came off faster. I went for a 2.5 mile walk yesterday 3/7 and hope to keep the exercise routine up. I am just hoping to see some weight loss in the coming weeks. If I didn't have soooo much to lose I guess I wouldn't be so bummed about the stall but I do have a lot to lose to even get friends and family to notice I've lost some weight. They give me a hard time too so that makes it even more stressful that the weight loss has stalled...people keep thinking I'm NOT trying or I've cheated or I've given up but that's not the case, I've just stalled out. OH well...guess it will be worth it when it eventually does come off. I'll take everyone's advice and try to start introducing some more veggies into my diet and step up the exercise routine. Perhaps that may jump start the weight loss. I certainly do hope so.
Thanks again to everyone for your replies. ![]() |

Hey dd... many (most?) of us have at one time or another hovered at a weight for a bit. Changing a few things can help... eat a protein you usually don't, like pork instead of chicken, or beef instead of fish. DO, please, add more veggies. Also... are you drinking enough good ole plain water? Water is necessary for fat metabolization. W/o it, your kidneys can't function properly... which will force your liver to help... when the liver is called on this way, it loses the opportunity to metabolize fat while helping the kidneys. Same for any other function the liver is called on for... like alcohol and medications. These things can slow down weight loss. So just be sure you're drinking enough water. If you feel like you live in the bathroom... that's just enough.

eat those veggies, girl!
i have discovered (thanks to portobella and tril) roasted cauliflower. 1 cup is 2 grams, and all you do is chop it into smaller pieces, coat in olive oil, and roast until nicely browned. add some salt, and mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm also good mixed with brocc (roasted - 1/2 cup brocc is around 2 grams - and so yummy!) tracy |
