That's the way I've always read it, now granted my Atkins books are a bit more out of date than some I see quoted here, but my whole understanding of atkins was that as long as you restrict the carbs, its hard to impossible for your body to create new fat.
This isn't to say you should eat 6,000 calories a day, but I was always under the impression that finishing off that 24 oz porterhouse steak was no big deal, or sneaking 4 burgers off the plate when no one was looking wasn't going to make an impact. |

It's certainly more difficult for the body to create more body fat on a low carb diet, but not impossible. I think that's a misconception about Atkins.
Dr Atkins warned us to eat low carb food until we are pleasantly full, but not stuffed. Your body will convert any excess energy (calories) into fat. The process for converting excess protein and fat from food into body fat consumes more energy, so you can eat more calories of low carb foods than high carb foods. If you burn all the calories you take in by working out in the gym for three hours per day, it won't turn to fat, of course, because there wouldn't be any excess calories. |
