I'm not at sure it's better to have value systems, eg. religions that are either ignorant of or indifferent to the fact that life is brutal unfair and short. I suppose the Dalai Lama can stand as a mute symbol but that's as far as it goes. Being pure of heart and clear of concience is wonderful thing but it leave s the ugly murky decisions to other people to make and those who refuse to cast the first stone can't come back later and complain about it.
Everyone understands that religion as a justification for violence is merely a marketing tool that gets the people in the tent. Everyone from Godfrey de Bouillon to Martin Luther to Saladin to Asoka understood this. But at the same time all those values exist in the world and in the context of the people who believe them. My God really IS better than those other gods over there. My land really is more important because God or Shiva or the purple comet told me. And I will fight to the death not to be contradicted on that one point. There's the justification, it's completely internalized. |
