This may turn into a very heated discussion, but as the admins say... "Keep a civil tongue"

Is there an objective "better" genre or an objective "worse" genre?

I'm not biased against any musical genres, but I want to hear peoples' opinions on the topic.

Not only that... What is it about that genre that makes it "better"?

To start it off, I have the opinion that R&B and Soul are among the best, since they have the ability to extract tons of emotions.

My barometer for a "good" genre is the ability to relate and extract emotions from the listeners.

And I beieve your last statement sums it up quite well..much like " in the eye of the beholder" comes to mind also.. since our reactions to emotions vary as does the person..we need different genre to satisfy this emotional/mental need. I also believe that how/when we are exposed to various forms of musicical form in our earlier years we become more accustome. Not to exclude the possibilty of the gene pool having an influence in our muscial genre preferences to one form or the other.

no. every genre has something, what is nice and interesting for some people, but others do not have to like it.

What one person believes to be "the best genre" is one person's opinion only ... it is not a quantitative measure for that particular genre. For instance, I absolutely loathe 'rap' ... it is not music for me, it's just noise. But, that is my opinion ... and having said that, I also respect those who love rap as it is their right to do so.

However, I draw the line when the people playing rap in their car 'force' everyone else to listen to it as they travel down the roads with their windows wide open, the radio cranked all the way up, even if it's 110°f outside. I don't go around playing my Messiaen organ CD's at full volume on the road - That's 'my' music and I respect those who don't care for all my likes in a particular music genre ... and I expect the same from others playing music of their choice.

There is no best type of music for me. Blind Lemon Jefferson or the London Philharmonic belting out the 1912 they all have a place for me. And that sums it up for me. Time and place and mood.

The very best of musical genre is without a doubt 'Chamber Music' and I'll fight any man that dare disagree and of course that is subjective.

I'm glad Krummhorn took the bull by the horns. He's right. That's why I'm down on Beethoven.
Imagine living in a time when there isn't electricity, cars, airplanes, factories, all the modern noise-makers.
But Beethoven wasn't happy to listen to the last idyllic European era, no, he had to conduct a symphony,
and considering real guns and cannons were used indoors to make those sounds,
you can say a symphony was the loudest manmade thing around, sonic abuse, to be polite.
So JHC, when you load up your chamber for chamber music, you're only being traditional.
Loud, very loud, but traditional. I thought you were modernistical.

modernistic?? me?? no!............very few modernist composers do much for me I do like Arvo Part and one or two others but avant garde music does little for me, and free form jazz?? uggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

It's only human nature to find it easier to get into something you've heard before,
or something that sounds like something you've heard before.

Or course, and of coarse, there are different human natures.

I would wager that 99% of people hate the sound of finger nails being scraped down (or up) a blackboard ! do you remember black boards and chalk and teachers with fat guts and foul smelling breath "and that was just the woman teachers" well a lot of so called av ant Gardie (Irish for police) music sounds similar to me

Chalk another one up for chalkboards, a very distinct but little used, and very misunderstood tonal supplier.

Imagine musical tones and volumes making children and parents argue and distance each other from their own environmental culture,
because it was rock musicians using instruments and effects, making sounds no-one used onstage before.
