Default Your Opinions On The Genre : Emo (Including History)
WHAT THE HELL IS EMO ANYWAY?

Source : http://iml.jou.ufl.edu/projects/Spri...ll/history.htm - The Emotional Punk Movement

Emotional-punk music's history is highly debatable, both because bands that have been part of the "emo" movement shun the term and try to distance themselves and because there is no clear-cut beginning to or emergence of the movement itself.
Most emo-privy people mark the emergence of the genre as being in 1984, when the band Rites of Spring began playing in Washington, D.C. In a surprising deviation from standard punk music, the RoS lead singer produced heavily emotion-laden lyrics, dangerously exposing himself and his personal feelings in each song. There was no precedent for this sort of direct vulnerability, with the closest comparable exposure being country/western music, in which singers lamented about dying dogs and insufferable in-laws. However, emo made the pain even more personal, as the singers exposed not those around them but themselves through their heart-wrenching tales of woe.

With the incorporation of Rites of Spring into the Washington, D.C. underground scene, emo became acceptable, and copycats followed. The next band to make a substantial impact through emo was Moss Icon, who combined Rites of Spring's lyrical heartbreak with traditional punk's energy, drawing new, excited audiences with its adopted intensity. As the music began to reach more and more people, the movement grew, and emotional-punk music began to spawn its own subculture in the early 1990s.

By the late '90s, the American teen's appetite for hardcore had somewhat subsided, replaced by a craving for semi-commercialized punk pop. The emo movement turned away from its hardcore roots and began to incorporate twinkling guitar or piano riffs, and melodies became more heavily emphasized as the music moved away from its "screamo" past. The music during the 1990s became more mainstream than ever, and by the millenium arguably "emo" bands were garnering regular rotation on MTV and radio stations nationwide.

Since emo emerged from the underground and came into the national spotlight, it has become more and more indistinguishable from its punk-pop counterpart, which is what has become of the original punk movement that spawned the emotional-punk subgenre. Modern pop is currently shying away from the boy bands and dance divas of the late '90s and early millenium, instead steadily moving toward more of a punk sound and overall culture. As these two (sub)genres overlap and reintegrate, a new underground will emerge as "hardcore" followers shun the commercialization of their movement. Now As a Kid who listens to Hardcore Punk/ Emo and EmoXcore I Love the style of music although i know there are alot of Emo haters out there, especally in America as i think the EMo "scene" has been around there for much Longer than over here in the UK, Im just wondering everyones opinions on this type of music, does it appeal to your ears or do you loath it

Noteable Bands - Both Emo and Hardcore
  • Dashboard Confessional
  • Jimmy Eat World
  • Refused
  • Underoath
  • Funeral For A Friend
  • As I Lay Dying
  • Alexisonfire
[b]Also I Would Add Lost Prophets and My Chemical Romance But They Seem A little Too Radio Friendly These Days[/i]

Emo punk is strange. Jimmy Eat World have been called Emo but also rock. They are one of my fav bands but I really don't see them as that big of a emo band. I guess they could be due to some of their songs but to me I see emo as more of a underground thing then they are(In that they are radio happy in a few of their songs)

Emo people scary me when I'm out at clubs lol. They need to smile some more . I have a few friends but, that dress like that and are really into it - good on them.

Jimmy Eat World is not Rock, they're a more upstaged version of Emo.

Basically that article gives the wrong impression, Emo is bands like Blink 182, Good Charlotte, Sum 41, those bands are the music that had widely become mainstream nowadays...possibly the most popular genre now.

Now Kizman, I don't see how Emo guys scare you away as they are the ones that dress in skater gear....same for Hardcore (which are bands like Bleeding Through, Hatebreed, Trivium, etc) You might be thinking of Goths which are generally centered around Metal (mostly anything not Nu Metal) bands such ass Children of Bodom, Dimmu Borgir, Fear Factory and the likes.

Now personally I hate Emo with a passion, it comes with me loving metal so much, but they all sound the same (Like sceaming 5 year olds), and of course the musical quality of the bands just goes along with almost everything mainstream nowadays...utter shit.

I can't stand Emo. I can't stand Emo fans even more.

It's a genre where the music has taken a backseat to the haircuts.

I've always believed that Emo is a very shallow and commercially driven genre of music. There is nothing meaningful about any of their lyrical content, and their musical abilities are pretty limited. Few Emo bands will ever have staying power.

There's only so many times you can hear about their girlfriend leaving them and their skateboard breaking before it becomes rather redundant...

To be honest i am a fan of all rock, as i am a part time guitarist in a band, and i like to keep open minded when writing...

Emo, metal, pop-punk, alt rock - they all have good and bad points to them, tho i agree with the comment from someone earlier that emo is actually now seen as more of a fashion sense than the actual music that is produced and delivered uner that genre, and that simply is not what rock is about

Everytime I see an emo kid I want to punch him straight between the fucking eyes.

Emo Chicks with Tattoos and Big Tits with limited piercings can be hot until you have a realationship with them and they end up having you talk them out of fucking suicide so at the end of the day its not worth it all to associate with anybody emo Man or Woman.

Wow what an intelligent post, I am the excact way. Because of always wanting to play diverse pieces, I have a crazy amount of respect for a large assortment of genres.

Emo just out of the bands you listed there, Alexisonfire and Dashboard Confessional I like alot. Even though the two bands are incredibly diverse, and I don't even think it's emo. But oh well. Alexisonfire's rhythm pieces are like Simple Plans most hardest intro/solo/bridge x100. They have alot of skill. As with Dashboard, the lead guy does pretty much all of the shit, and his acoustic skills are amazing. I can respect that. Plus both bands have amazing vocalists, which is an added +. I'm not a big fan of Jimmyeatworld because I dont care for their singer. But I do respect them.

Bands like Falloutboy and even Panic at the Disco I respect as well, both have pretty talented singers and the guitar work is actually pretty decent. Falloutboy is actually one of my favorite bands, while PattheD are a little fucked up. I dont like them that much. But respect is given!
