Yeah the Darkness are a pretty rotten band vocally of course, that singer annoys me to death, but the solos are pretty fuckin crazy.
I'd never buy their album. But the solos are awesome for our time.

I don't really listen to a lot of music and don't really know the top musicians of today, but i do think a good guitar solo always makes a song just a little better, this is electric guitar i'm talkin i think those solo's are kick-ass.

Yo~

I've downloaded some of the Probot stuff. The song he did with Cronos from Venom (one of the bands who started black metal), is actually a pretty kool song. Maybe just because I like hearing Cronos sing again.

Dave is a kool guy, he's one of the few people in the mainstream that I still respect as a musician, and he is a pretty good drummer, just not the greatest.

I think having skill in multiple categories is better then excelling at one thing. With that being said my favorite Artist, and ya'll probably won't be suprised, is Jerry Cantrell.

He can sing (DL Solitude)
He can play guitar (DL Hurt's don't it? -- Tribute song to Layne Staley, it's all just Jerry playing guitar, no lyrics -- awesome stuff.)
He can write great lyrics (DL Spiderbite and listen to the symbolism)

Peace.

Default What are you into?
I don't quite know how to put this...you know how some people love great guitar work, some love great drumming, and so on? Well, what are you into, and who do you believe is the leading man in that category today?
I believe that good drumming can make a good song great, and that the world's best living drummer is the great Dave Grohl. His originality and creativity for Queens of the Stone Age is unparraleled; the man is simply incredible.
How about you?

Has to be Drums and Guitar, Drums has to go to Dave Grohl, Just listen to Song for the Dead on Songs For The Deaf by Queens of The Stone Age, amazing.

For Guitar, obviously Jimi Hendrix, the man is THE legend when it comes to the guitar

Yeah Man Dream Theatre is suposed to be bomb, John Petrucci there guitarist is one of the best guitarists in the world, when Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai and Joe Satriani all went out on tour for their HUGE G3 TOUR they ask like one special guest and they asked John Petrucci, that's a sign you're one hell of a guitarist when you're out there with Malmsteen,Vai and Satriani.

And as for Probot, I wonder how that's gonna turn out, Grohl said in Guitar World he actually did his parts and then sent them to the people who agreed to take part in it and then they recorded on it. Pretty cool stuff.

I'm gonna have to agree with you on this one Feral. Dave Grohl is pretty much a living legend. His work is just amazing.

And, as much as I dislike the guy, Lars Ulrich from Metallica is a pretty bad ass drumer. I don't like him as a person, but as a musician, he is awesome.

Yo~

There's no way to choose one aspect over the other. If there's a band with the best guitar player ever, but a talentless idiot playing drums, I won't enjoy it. If they have the fastest drummer ever but the riffs suck, I won't enjoy it.

The only thing I can tend to put up with is a bad vocalist. I can listen to good music even if the singer sucks.

The musicians that you people worship crack me up. Yeah, Dave Grohl is good, and I'm even half-way interested in his Probot heavy metal project, but there are drummers out there that could kill him.

Anyways...to attempt to answer your question, I suppose guitar just because that's the instrument I play, but like I said above, all the parts have to work together to make good music.

Guitar all the way, A Good guitar solo can make a song, for example The Darkness their new song sucks until the big guitar solo, and then I'm like damn these guys are real musicians. A guitar solo in modern day shows me you have creative control at least a little and it shows you know how to play your instrument(Musical Instrument of course).

A Prime example is Slash of Guns N Roses the band would be awesome without solos but they're simply amazing with solos.

Sum 41 is an example, I only listen to them because of the solos, Dave Baksh is awesome.

But the best example is Metallica, without solos it's simple to say... Solos make Metallica...and without them they suck!!

Guitar 4 Life.

I like guitar the most, but i wouldnt know who is the best in the world right now... i know the kinda stuff i like in terms of guitar (i like alot of the guitar in Nickelback songs for example) but at the same time the stuff i like i dont think is neccessarily the most skilled guitar playing (maybe somebody who knows what they're on about more can help me here)... but either way, good guitar can make an otherwise average song great in my view

An impressive guitar solo can make for a helluva song. Just listen to Van Halen's Eruption. In the 80s, Metallica's Ride the Lightning intro was the shit.

Dream Theater is another favorite (I'm not good with guitarists' names). Holy shit, just listen to Metropolis Part 2 and the masterpiece of an album, Images and Words.
