Default Bandwidth...
Any of you guys who run your own sites might want to read this...

I run Beastiemixes.com and have for the last 2 years noticed a few sites linking to our mixes, but because it was a small number I never thought much of it, but as we added features, Download counts, top 25 most downloaded mixes etc. it bugged me a little that these sites were linking directly to my hosted guys's files. and not triggering the download counts etc.. I blocked them via an .htaccess file, but they had already indexed hundreds of files. and were using my site to stream tracks through their site loaded with ads and making money off of my guys and my hard work using a couple tricks to bypass the .htaccess file, via copying addresses into the browser toolbar, etc....

These sites are essentially search engines that search for mp3 files, then they catalog them, and put them on their sites for people to stream off of their site directly off of YOUR site.

I know that some of you guys just want your tracks out there, and I understand that, but my guys like to see the numbers, and like to know what's going on with their tracks. And it was rather disturbing to find out that other sites were using their tracks to populate their sites full of ads and pulling the files directly from beastiemixes each and every time someone wants to stream it.

They're essentially grabbing something that's free, and getting paid to do so. I don't get paid to run my site, and I don't expect someone else to get paid for me to run my site.

If you pay a premium for your monthly bandwidth, then this can become a problem, and there are a few ways to block them.

One of them is your .htaccess file, you can google search for how to block urls, from accessing your site via .htaccess, the other is to frequently change your download folder path so they constantly have the wrong address to the files on your site. The other thing you can do is zip your mp3 files, as their search spider looks for mp3 files and not zip files. There is really no method to protect your site that works for all sites, so just do what you can to keep them guessing.

These are a few of the sites that you might want to take a look at and see if your tracks are on.....

You can hit me up with questions and I will try and help where I can. Probably best to mail me from my site, as I read the mail every day there.
