Default Silencing your mind….
Yesterday I went for a bike ride with my son….we normally go on a bike path by the bay. It’s one of my favorite places to go. Normally this helps me clear my head, but I found it difficult to silence my thoughts. I have been trying but before I know it my mind wonders and continues on to think. Does anyone have any tips.

It takes practice. Some days you will find it easier than other days depending on the level of emotions you have that day.

Just keep dismissing them. Worry/fear thoughts are the most common. Just dismiss them and say "Ok, I'll think about that later, I want to enjoy the ____ instead right now."

Keep dismissing the negative thoughts or intruding/pending things your ego thinks you should be doing. Your spirit is the most important, feed it often !

i have trouble with this also, but sometimes i like to visualise the thought and imagine it passing through, this way it doesnt stop in my mind for me to think about it...it use to be distracting for me but i find if i dont attach a feeling to it, it just passes on by....does that make sence lol

I use to hear a lot that focusing on your breathing helps tremendously for some people. Well, not for me... Because then I'm just thinking really hard to focus on my breathing and everything feels kind of "forced". lol But maybe you should try this, it works for a lot of people.
I don't think there's any right way of doing this, it just comes naturally... Perhaps some people have their own "tricks" I just try to feel an emptyness in my mind whenever I do this...

I just talked to my sister about this yesterday. As human beings, naturally, our thougths have control over us. We walk and drive our cars and thoughts pop into our heads; in which we then at that time give the thougt our attention. It can be hard to change this pattern but it can be done.

Here is a simple way that has worked for me.

Each time a thought enters, say to yourself, "no." The thought will immediately return, say, "no." Replace the thought with 1 object or 1 color. Say the object to yourself until finally all you are focusing on is that 1 object.

In waking mode, I've found that I can never completely silence my mind. i usually focus on 1 object for a period of time until eventually my thoughts take off running again. lol.

I do, however, use this method for trying to silence my thoughts into meditation. I go down to 1 color and then when all I can see is that 1 color in my vision, my mind has shut up and I go from there.

Of course, I am just now re-starting to meditate so a color tends to be all I see but the effects of the silence and the meditation itself are very nice.

Good luck

For me, it depends upon the level of emotional attachment, and urgency of the thoughts. If I can't let them go like a leaf on a stream, then I attend to them, and try to find a mental resolution, but only assertive planning seems to work. Both aggressive or passive(victimization) thoughts only intensify, and lengthen my attachment.

Living in the moment is a cure-all if you can do it. Even Zen monks living in monasteries hear a Zen bell, which is rung at irregular intervals, and this alerts them to come back to the moment. They, too, need reminding.

I usually say the mantra 'I am a peaceful soul, a being of light' over and over again in my mind. The stronger the thoughts, the more I force the mantra until it is the only thought & feeling I have.

Thanks Ross

Some days can be more challenging than others, but I noticed that this exercise gets easier the more you do it. xxx
