That's very special Chris. I can feel how important it is to you and I know what you mean. We take so many things for granted here, the bridges, the roads, the schools...but it's when you go there and see the direct impact of what you do..it makes all the difference. My dad worked with the UN in Nepal for 6 months and he tells me that was the most life changing experience of his. Same here when I traveled there, I realized the importance of my skills and how it could potentially directly impact so many lives. Building a good water system and wells literally saves hundreds of lives...
It's a very special thing Chris. Just the realization is special but going there and doing something is priceless. I'm sure you will have the time of your life there.....being there seeing the real impact seeing all the hard work finally pay off with the big proud feeling that you are making a difference.. I'm very excited for you. As you know, I have a passion for Rwanda so I might actually be following your footsteps in the years to come....going there.. Love, Mystic |

P.S. about the emotionally draining part...I traveled with my dad to the places he helped build wells, water systems and toilets in..(they have a huge problem with waste management)...the emotionally draining part was seeing the difference in lifestyle. Seeing people suffer, live a hopeless life....But, all you can do is do your best and pray that the universe helps them...it was really painful for me being there and seeing the lack of hope...
The other frustrating part is not a lot of people there are educated and they don't make use of what you build for them. For example, the community latrines they built weren't used, they were converted into "storage spaces" and you face resistance from the elders and others in the village when you go there to tell them about the health and hygiene so that is frustrating... It's not an easy task emotionally but it's great one too. |

Hey guys,
Today has to be the best day of my life. I will be going to Rwanda this summer and guess what I'll be doing? I'll be working with a group of local engineers and some engineering students building and designing basic sustainable infrastructure there...like good water system, and schools in the rural areas. I think it's something very special. I have always wanted to do that..I finally get a chance to. It's going to feel great, I get a leave from work and go there and volunteer... Dunno if any of you have read my financial challenge blog but I mentioned my dream of doing something useful with what I have learned...well, I finally get a chance to...Financially it may be draining but I have a feeling it's going to be the most exciting months of my life. It also promises to be emotionally draining however. I'm not sure if I'm ready to be there..but I'm really excited. It's possible that we will be involved in some other projects working directly with the people there to increase education and get them involved in the development of their country.... So, just wanted to tell ya... |
