Why, who and whats the belief behind it. I've seen it in lots of places.. :s or :-s

Harry, it is the belief that one should not take God's name in vain. It started from judiasm but, there are lots of other people especially in the internet world who do this because they dont want to take the Lord's name in vain. So, this is mostly done by replacing the O with a -
