i am struggling right now with whether to let my 14 year old cat die slowly and peacefully at home or to take her to the vet and have her put down. there is nothing anyone can do to save her; it’s just a matter of time.
she’s not eating or drinking and she can barely walk. she bleeds off and on but not a lot. she doesn’t seem in pain, but her quality of life has completely diminished. she walks in circles if she walks at all. her eyes are very murky. she’s fading away, slowly. just because she doesn’t appear to be suffering, how could she not be? we can’t help people end their suffering, but we can help animals. i don’t know what to do. i’m torn. would it be more traumatic to take her to the vet at this point when she likely only has a few days left? is it selfish of me to not want to watch her slowly die? am i thinking about myself rather than my animal? i just want to do the humane thing. she’s been a part of my life for a long time. |

kris-
my heart goes out to you. i too am an animal lover and have always had a cat in my life. for myself, i have never been able to be the decision maker when it came time to let my cats go. in all cases, the cat was put down, and i believe it was the humane decision under the circumstances. i also believe that all living things have a spirit and that we can connect with that spirit through empathy and meditation. i don't know how you feel about meditation, but if you are open to it, i'd suggest meditating on this question. spirit always answers. my thoughts go out to your and your cat. i hope you both find peace. -h |

my heart really goes out to you kris. pets are family.
i talk to my dog all the time and i always joke that she speaks perfect english. she does understand quite a bit. what i would suggest is holding your cat, telling her you love her that you will always love her and that it's okay for her to go. tell her all your feelings, what she means to you, say goodbye. i believe she may sense what you are trying to say and that she may be hanging around because she doesn't want to hurt you. take care sweetie, megan |

i think it was shirley maclaine (i am not sure who it was exactly but it was a movie star) who had a public reading done by a psychic and oddly enough the first entity to come through to visit her was her pet dog that she had had for years and died.
so it is my opinion that no matter what decision you make your pet cat will be with you and will be waiting for you when you cross over too. my sympathies are with you. i know it is like a family member. |

thank you everyone for your heart felt replies. it's amazing how much comfort can be garnered from this group in times of need.
you may considered asking your cat? he/she may be able to tell you if they need or want help or not? you know rhonda, i hadn't considered asking my cat. so when i got home after work i did just that. you know what, she purred. she hadn't purred in about four days. that was my answer. i had her put down at 8:00 last night. we had a proper burial for her complete with tomb stone. it was, of course, sad, but i'm happy my cat is at peace and i know our paths will cross again. my 12 year old daughter put a note inside the box we buried her in that said: "please come back as a human so we can talk and visit me in my dreams". out of the mouths of babes eh? during the hardest part, when the vet took her from me to euthanize her, i sat outside and i thought about all of you who had written to me and it brought me immense comfort. i feel blessed and privileged to be a part of this amazing group of people. thank you for your thoughts and words. i could feel them in my time of need. much love to you all kris |
