hi all,
earlier this week i took a mandarin out of my fridge and started to peel it, and at the same time i split the manadarin in half. what i saw next totally amazed me. one of the seeds had sprouted a brand new shoot, from within the un-opened mandarin, and inside the cold depths of my refrigerator! it was only about 3cm long and at the top of the shoot were some leaves that were starting to grow already. it was such a beautiful bright healthy green colour, against the orange backdrop of the mandarin. you may be thinking - so what. but i reasearched the chance of this happening, and found it to be most unlikely at all - because manadarins grown from seed, need to be kept in a warm environment for approx. 18 - 21 days before they will sprout. instantly i took this as a positive sign that 'new life' can be created from an impossible enviroment, and so i immediately buried the half mandarin in my garden in the hopes that it would continue to grow. i dug it out today (pic attached) after a friend suggested to take a photograph of it (expecting it to be rotten by now), only to discover that it had grown some more! just curious if anyone else here has experienced any positive signs or unlikely events such as this that gave them personal hope of survival? |

that's cool. my family had tropical plant and they accidently left it out in the freezing cold winter for about 3 weeks to a month. the plant was dead my grandmother broke most of the branches off and we just kept it inside then on new years day we awoke and find that a small flower was growing out of it. it was amazing i heard that is a sign of renewal and rebirth

i've got a pet cactus called prick. he's got the name for an obvious reason, his shape!
anyway, last year he started to do something very strange. from his normal erect position he developed the droop, bending over about 60 degrees. he then proceeded to turn 360 degrees over a period of about two weeks. he remained pointing in a southsoutheast direction. i was curious about this so i turned him around 180 degrees and put a cardboard box (with holes so he could breath) over him. i didn't remove the box for a week, but when i did i found he had turned back to the sse position. not long after, he returned to his erect position, and has stayed there ever since. very weird. |

instantly i took this as a positive sign that 'new life' can be created from an impossible enviroment this isn't really the same thing but neat anyways. one year i planted a garden and i planted carrots and radishes close to each other.
somehow two different seeds grew together and i ended up with a half carrot/half radish. it was a long pinkish looking carrot with carrot tops that were part radish tops part carrot tops! i did take a picture but it wasn't digital otherwise i would share it. and yes i did eat it and it tasted like a mixture of the two. megan |

that is wayyyyy cool! i will grow anything that will grow, from anywhere. i live in canada, and it is cold in the winter, but i have started growing dragon fruits, almonds, and peanuts etc inside my house, and a huge garden outside, finally winter is over....i really would love an earthship though one day and grow a lot more in doors....
but it is cool to preserve these things as much as possible, with (big company everyone knows) trying to patent seeds and genetically modify them all....i am trying to save whatever species and variety i can ever since i heard about the gm crap. |

what a strong little seed. that is indeed unusual for a citrus seed to sprout in a cold refrigerator. i guess it is all about how much that seed wanted it.
life exists everywhere on this planet. in the most extreme conditions. on the bottom of an underwater canyon, 20 leagues under the sea. and in extreme temperatures. like boiling hot water next to an underwater volcano. but the miracle about your mandarin is that it is not accustomed to cold temperatures but it still wanted to live. i wish i had half the fight that that little seed does. maybe i do. thanks for sharing your story. |
