i saw this on tv.
elephants are beautiful animals. there is so much we could learn from the animal kingdom if we would only take the time to listen to them. i'm glad that the fact elephants doing these paintings can teach people to have more respect for them, but it shouldn't be necessary. i had to sigh when they were talking about using mirrors to prove that they had the intelligence of self-awareness. of course they do! there are different types of "intelligence" anyway. we all have our own doors of perception, we are all animated by the same light of the infinite! |

hi amélie
i'm taking a break from the forum to go to stockholm, but was happy to watch this before i go! at the same time i'm a very "sceptic believer", sounds a bit schizofrenic but since you never see the whole elephant, a person behind, besides or near the elephant could influence it somehow...don't want to "put the wet blanket" as you say, over this wonderful video, it's amazing even if there's a human influence liliane |

i think that was one of the weirdest things i have ever seen. an elephant wielding a paint brush better than me?
i agree with you guys, it makes me think maybe we are seeing the next stage of evolution. it also makes me consider yet again, the killing of animals for meat. but that is a whole 'nother can of worms. really interesting. thanks for sharing that. foo |

that is plain beutiful, trained or not. and this is in no way like clever hans the horse. the delecacy of such a massive animal is touching. just as david said in the 2012 enigma these things will be more commonplace, just like the story of the dolphin saving the pilot whales from beaching, and the thread i posted on the dog arranging its toys in geometrical shapes, and not to mention the border collie from germany that understands over 300 words and learns new ones almost everyday, sometimes faster than a child.
great stuff! |

i just saw this video and was skeptical until the camera panned out. it could still be a fake. on the other hand i saw a film on discovery i believe about elephant babies that were bieng taken care of after thier parents had been killed by poachers. you could see that the young elephants were very emotionally hurt and the humans really had to help them get out of thier depressions. when the elephants got better and grew up they would let them go they would go out into the wild. some would come back and the humans would have to be carefull and let the elephants dominate the situation and then the elephants upon making sure the coast was clear would smell them. elephants have a very keen sense of smell and remember humans this way.

i have to admit, i've never really been one for animals, any animal, (something i've been working on). so when i entered this particular thread, i didn't even click on the first video link.
however, when i got down to nem338nem's link i read no further and clicked on the video and watched it. i was shocked to find that it brought tears to my eyes!! thinking this was odd, i re-entered this thread to continue reading and then discovered that this same video bought tears to other peoples eyes as well! i think i can happily say that i'm starting to realise (deep down inside) that animals are not just pets, or not just creatures to look at in the zoo - these have been my feelings up to this point (even though i have had many pets since childhood), and i've always wanted to change the way i feel but have never been able to. thank you for such an eye and heart opening thread. |

that is one of the most moving and beautiful things i have seen in my life. (oops caps sorry) i wish i could go hug that elephant, and tell him how wonderful he is. i love animals sooo much, i wish i could save them all and have a bunch living with me to hug all the time. yes....i am a geek, i know!

i didn't look that close, but are you sure it as a he? hehe
this one brought tears to my eyes. i just had a dream about elephants, and i see elephants in trees and often those trees look like an elephant foot at the base. trees are so smart, just like elephants. i actually talk to trees and get wonderful messages from them. after viewing this i'll be asking the elephants about more things. great reminder of how we are all connected. |

great videos. as a general rule, humans like to think they're smarter than they actually are and like to think of others as mindless. this viewpoint will change as more people internalize scenes such as these, both through the internet but hopefully first-hand on their journeys.
i remember an elephant who paid the local park a visit a couple of years ago. the clarity of his feelings were tremendous, and it was really disarming to bear witness to this powerful, calm level of consciousness that i've never felt within anyone. i remember the handler telling no one to touch him...but like the mischief maker i am, there was a point where i walked up to the elephant and placed my hand on his snout; no one said anything there's a sad part of this story though. i remember when they were loading him back on the truck he really didn't want to go back in...he wanted to stand in the sun and be the centre of attention in the middle of all these cool people. it was a really moving moment as he hesitated on the gigantic stool he used to get in the truck, with two legs in the truck and his hindlegs still planted as he stared back at all of his. when he finally had the courage to get in the truck, a surge of relief but mixed with sadness just rippled through the crowd. and he never made it back home, back to his native land. he had lived at a zoo in bowmanville (southern ontario) for a while, but the handler was noticing he was getting more listless and depressed as the days went by. they knew they had to bring him back. he was scheduled to arrive back on the reserve in (zambia? i may be wrong there, it was a while ago), yet around 6 months after i saw him on that beautiful summer day he passed away at the zoo in bowmanville. but i bet he's chillin' around on the savannah right now, or maybe is remembering his last show i just happened to be around to see. all i can say is thanks elephant-man, you'll definitely make it on my top #10 moments of this life |
