OBEs and Astral Projection were a big interest of mine a few years back, but I was never able to have a conscious exit or anything more than a few short lucid dreams. I don't think I ever had the proper training, which I think was a big factor in my failure to achieve the experiences I was searching for. I recently got back into reading about OBEs and picked up AD along with MAP a couple weeks ago. I've been trying to do it right this time... trying not to jump the gun by doing stuff that is too advanced for me, so I haven't gotten to any information about exit techniques this time around. Last night though, I had a very strange experience that I don't think I ever anticipated having. I was hoping maybe some people could help shed a little light.
So last night, I woke up from a normal dream shortly after I went to sleep, which itself is quite unusual for me. I went to sleep and awoke lying on my side. As I lay there, I just tried to stay conscious as I fell back to sleep. I don't think I was trying to do anything specifically because I didn't even try to roll onto my back before doing this. I almost immediately felt incredibly strong exit sensations, which had never happened to me. My entire body was shaking violently and I felt it literally splitting in two. I remember a strong pain coming from one of my ears, the one that was directly on my pillow. Because of this I wanted to roll onto my back, but I didn't want to kill these sensations, so I kind of just willed myself to roll over. I felt it, but I didn't know if I was actually doing it, because the sensations were still there and strong. At that point it felt as if the whole lower half of my body was entirely split, and now my, head which was feeling less pain, was able to follow. I felt myself rising and rising, and knew that I had become totally free of my body. "Excellent! A conscious exit... FINALLY!" I didn't know exactly what to do at this point, but I started flying around like I usually would do when I awake in a lucid dream. I felt strong winds against me, and I heard loud music... out of all things. I don't ever remembering hearing music in my dreams, and I never expected there to be music during an OBE, so that was quite confusing. Something else I wasn't understanding was that I had no sight. Everything was black except for a point of white light in my center of vision. It was rather upsetting. I tried to fly towards this light, and in doing so I couldn't help but think "Have I died?", just because of the nature of the act of coming towards the light. I quickly shrugged the idea off though. The light wasn't getting much bigger and I was losing hope. For most of this time I had a strong sense of my physical eyes/eyelids, like I normally do during a lucid dream. I didn't want to open them for fear of losing the experience but I was becoming extremely frustrated, so I decided to try it by just peeking with one eye. I saw exactly the opposite of what I expected to see... myself from the ceiling above me. This was strange for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I clearly opened my eyes. In a lucid dream, this always meant that I would wake up. Also I had been frantically flying around, and flying towards the light, but yet, I was still hovering over my body? Well, I thought... okay now the real experience can begin. But I was firmly glued to my position above my body. I stayed there for a while, just staring back at myself, unsure of what to do or how to break free. I feel like it ended with me just slowly floating back down to my body, but I was losing some consciousness at this point because this was the only cloudy part of the memory. When I reached my body, I instantly "woke up". But this was probably the strangest part to actually experience for me, because I woke up on the floor, at the foot of my bed. On top of that I was wearing a sweater that I had not been wearing as I went to sleep. I crawled back into my bed, extremely confused. I just lay there, thinking about what had happened, trying to justify being able to wake up on the floor with different clothing but it wasn't making sense. I got out of bed and walked outside to get some fresh air and take my sweater off. I started to feel a little nauseous and made my way to the bathroom. A foamy sort of vomit started to come up and when I reached my sink, I woke up, again, this time for real. So thanks for anyone who has taken the time to read through this. I don't know what any of it means and I can't stop thinking about it. Was I asleep the whole time? Including the part where I initially woke up before the exit? Is this why the exit was so easy, because I was actually already asleep? Why did I have no vision before I opened my eyes, and is there anything significant about the point of white light, and the music? Why was I stuck hovering above my body? Is it just a lack of experience on how to handle it? I've never woken up from a dream inside a dream and never had a conscious exit or OBE besides a lucid dream. Having these all together was just quite unusual for me. I don't really know what to take from the whole thing. Is it normal to go through something like this? I was hoping someone more knowledgeable could help me break it down a little. Thanks again! |

Was I asleep the whole time? Including the part where I initially woke up before the exit? I think you were conscious when you started.
Is this why the exit was so easy, because I was actually already asleep? It's possible but the heavy vibrations suggest a conscious exit to my way of seeing things. Why did I have no vision before I opened my eyes, and is there anything significant about the point of white light, and the music? I'm thinking you were dealing with more than one of your subtle bodies. My guess is that while in the astral or mental plane you didn't know how to perceive so you experienced astral blindness. Saltcube forum advises something they call the eye pry method for this problem, however, you weren't truly blind. You had the little white spot. The white spot can be mentally pulled towards you and expanded into a screen that you can then enter. Music is experienced by many lucid dreamers and astral projectors. Remember the data you receive while out of body is being translated into terms and experiences you can understand. Why was I stuck hovering above my body? Is it just a lack of experience on how to handle it? That was your etheric body. It can't go a long way from you physical body without your transferring consciousness into the next subtle body (astral body). I've never woken up from a dream inside a dream and never had a conscious exit or OBE besides a lucid dream. They're called false awakenings and they're very common for projectors and lucid dreamers. Because you're multi-dimensional, the memories you recall in the physical body might be memories obtained from adventures in your etheric, astral, mental body or the others but it's fairly common for the dream body consciousness to take over and for a projection/lucid dream to end in normal dreams and false awakenings. Having these all together was just quite unusual for me. I don't really know what to take from the whole thing. Is it normal to go through something like this? I was hoping someone more knowledgeable could help me break it down a little. It's normal and, I think, a lot of fun figuring it out. I hope this helps a little. |

Ah, thank you beekeeper for your insight. It's starting to make more sense.
I was obviously completely unprepared for the experience, but I guess everyone has to start somewhere. So did the act of opening my eyes transfer my consciousness from my astral body into the etheric body? Either way, I'm assuming it was the wrong move. What would be the best step if I were to find myself in the same situation in the future? I see that I should have willed the light to come towards me rather than trying to go towards it myself, but could I have just closed my eyes again to find myself back where I was? I guess what I'm really getting at is, is there an easy way to transfer consciousness to the astral body from the etheric? I'm sure this is covered in material that I have yet to read, but I can't help trying to figure it out now since I've had the experience. And yes, it is fun trying to analyze the experience, I was just so overwhelmed by everything today. |

So did the act of opening my eyes transfer my consciousness from my astral body into the etheric body? That's my guess. Robert might have a different opinion if you were to ask him and I'd humbly defer to his expertise.
I don't think there was a wrong move, really, since it's all learning and you brought back memories of an interesting experience. I'd be pretty pleased, if I were you. What would be the best step if I were to find myself in the same situation in the future? Hmm, well you might try something else for a different outcome. Generally, there's more than a single option here. You could try drawing the spot of light towards you as stated. If there is no light, you still have choices. You can will yourself well away from your body and might succeed in gaining vision and having a nice adventure in the real time zone or even an astral adventure. You can operate blind too. A couple of years ago my son managed to have a blind OBE where he rummaged around in the freezer and felt a loaf of bread and I've functioned without sight on a few occasions. You could try asking for help and see if some type of guide shows up. Or you could attempt to create your next subtle body through an exteriorization technique and then will a transfer of consciousness into that. Generally, though, you don't always have tremendous presence of mind in these circumstances (maybe it develops as you attain real levels of competency). Sometimes something strikes you intuitively and you just start doing it. I think that's just fine too. |

I just wanted to post back confirming that you were right in saying that I was physically conscious before the exit.
It happened to me again the following night, this time I woke up on my stomach. I tried the same thing, which really wasn't anything special, just tried to stay conscious as I went back to sleep. I had the same strong exit sensations, and this time I knew I was awake. Unfortunately I decided to roll over on to my back halfway through because I was in an awkward position and didn't feel too comfortable projecting that way. It ended up being unsuccessful, but I think I would've had the same easy exit as I did the previous night had I stayed in the same position. I have this inability to easily fall asleep while on my back, which I need to work on. Also, I don't know why I keep waking up shortly after going to sleep, but I'm really happy I do... I get an easy chance to project before having really read anything significant about exit techniques. It's really boosting the confidence I have about projecting. |
