I'm sorry for bumping this thread, but it seems interesting to me, to pinpoint the meaning behind this phenomena.
I have a few ideas. 1) The Dweller could be a negative part of yourself. It reminds me of a part in the Golden Dawn compendium which states that as much as the benevolent sephiroth must be balanced to fulfil your higher self, the mirrored qlippoth of your personality must be cleansed from within you and mirrored underneath you, so that it might serve as a beast to "ride" on instead of a hindrance. It sounds like, once overcome, this dweller is harmless (mostly) and often either disappears or is rendered neutral / positive. 2) It could be another aspect of the astral showing you a lesson you need to learn: NOT to fear. In the actual astral, fear would catapult you to lower realms, where things COULD be potentially dangerous, no? Alternatively, it could just be fed on by negs, or attract them from thoughtforms that aren't as close in the RTZ, where fear could be overcome. 3) The dweller could actually be a neg which is very common, and feeds off of fear much as a succubus leeches sexual energy. As I read about this stuff, I get the sensation of someone behind me watching. I get this whenever I am stimulated fearfully, even if it's something irrational, like thinking about how scary rabies is. It's quite possibly similar to the succubus, but just as weak. The difference is that fear propogates itself, whereas sexual release generally is followed by a lull, so to speak. Very interesting, to me. I might research it. Hooded figures. Hm. Off the top of my head, symbolic of the unknown. Equated with Death. Sketchy figures. Dubious motives. Characterized by watching you, but you can't see their eyes. A decided silence. And now, I hit google. ![]() Findings: READ THE WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE. It has theories which I find very compelling, from the standpoint of both past lives (LunaBaby) and battles the self must undergo to overcome fear. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dweller_on_the_threshold |

(Forgive me if I said so before, I didn't read the previous pages) but the author Kurt Leland has some fascinating ideas for the Dweller phenomenon-
For example, the Dweller can be a protective (but not necessarily 'nice & sweet') self-aspect whose task it is to actually protect you from going somewhere you're not ready for, and the hood may be a symbolic representation of 'shielding' or 'drawing back' the energy it actually has- like the entities Monroe met that were forced to 'dim themselves down' because he was not ready to handle the intense energy. I find this theory very compelling. |

How do you think the fear factors into that if it could attract negative entities?
I think the idea of a protector is compelling, especially if the reason that the projector is being "protected" from the astral is due to an inability to overcome fear. That's compelling to me. The hood idea is interesting, though I'm not as sure where you're coming from about reigning in energies. Wouldn't it just cloak identity? |

The idea (not mine, btw, I can't take the credit for it) is that the hood is a covering, as would be a cloak, or armor, or something to cover the 'too intense' energy, and is expressed archetypically- so the cloak (the hood doesn't always happen, but we all associate the dweller with this mental picture) is symbolic. It doesn't always cover the face (in my case, never) yet it conveys the idea of 'covering'.
His idea (Kurt's) is that the symbol of the dweller has assumed a 'classic' form in the collective unconscious- the idea of 'covering up the intensity of energy' comes from Monroe's writings about his encounters with these entities that have to 'tone down' to protect him. Personally, I have not had hooded entities- my dwellers all come in different shapes and sizes, both genders and also formless blobs. If I were going to find something that connects them all, I'd say That they all caused fear, a primal fear that had almost nothing to do with the figure itself Most (not all of them) had red glowing eyes A lot of them exhibited the same repetitive behavior- they're walking around the bed, they 'notice' I can see them, and then come over close to me and I wake up in terror, because I can't raise my arms to protect myself from their touch. Some of them talk to me and make fun of my fear, tease me. I had one look (I swear to God this is true) like Rodney Dangerfield. I sometimes wonder if one type of them is what I call 'monkeys' (a type of neg I sometimes find in projection)- one of the things about monkeys is that they shape-shift and are extremely intelligent. So I would think that the visceral fear you get could indeed attract one of those. But of course, this is speculative. Most of my dweller symptoms seem to be energy related, especially when they're formless blobs. And once I was actually taught something from one of them. That experience is in the dreaming section I think. So that brings me back to the 'tough love' protector type. |

CF,
I apologize in advance if I make any errors in this post. It's 15 minutes after midnight where I am. I didn't have anything to do, so I decided to look for your mentioned dweller post, and also something that you said (also involving a dweller) where you initially fought the thing, but then ended up reasoning with it and it going away. Uh, so, after three hours I couldn't find anything. I ditched the dreaming forum and used the search function after a bit. Maybe I'm just slow. Or too tired. But yeah... If you can find a link to that that would be great. For some reason I've been slightly obsessed with this dweller idea for the past few days. Actually, the word "dweller" itself makes me slightly fearful. I suppose that's not a good thing... I can only imagine what I'll feel when or if I actually get the experience. Anyways. Um. Sleeping now. Thanks for the amazing responses, by the way. |
