Default swallowing saliva is distracting to me while trying to obe
how do I overcome the problem

everytime i lay on bed and try to have an obe, saliva builds up in my throat and everytime i swallow i wake myself up a little bit.. then it builds up again and i have to swallow again, its so annoying. how come it's so distracting when i try to have an obe, but when normally i'm just sleeping or laying there then i barely notice myself swallowing

I'm not much of an expert, but I seem to have the same problem at times and also have a problem with my mouth drying out and breaking my concentration. I find the easiest way to deal with it is to make sure you are breathing in from your nose and out of your mouth, as your breathin slows down it seems to be less and less of a problem. As for having to swallow due to saliva build up, does this happen early in your meditation or in the later stages? For me its usually an issue early on and as I get more relaxed and start shifting my focus to other parts of my body I don't really think about it. You might be giving it to much atention, but as you get deeper into meditation the need to swallow should fade away. But I will be watching to see if anyone else has a better method other than just controling breathing and trying not to think about it

OBE induction increases awareness of everything, including things that annoy you.
It seems you need something to think about when you're doing your practice.
What are you doing to get in trance?

to get into trance? i just try convincing myself that im tired and to give up trying to stay awake... usually I can trick my mind to become more tired, and soon some buzzing starts.

yeah it seem to be more a problem in the beginning as I start out... subsides a bit as I go deeper and closer to sleep state

I think what CFT is refering to as a "trance state" is similar to waking paralisis but slightly different, when in paralisis you feel very heavy and like you are not able to move your physical body and as you get deeper it developes into trance when you start feeling your energy flowing and your energy body starts seporating from the physical. I believe the trance state is one of the last states before OBE. CFT can correct me if I am mistaken.

As for the whole saliva thing, CFT is very correct on how things that annoy you are amplified, for me the key is to go with it rather than fight it. Like when you are getting ready to sleep, you have no concern for swallowing because all you are doing is falling asleep, but when you are trying to OBE your consciousness is well aware of what you are trying to do, but the normal sleep process seems to be distracting you. Try doing breathing exercises early in your meditation to help slow your breathing, so by the time you are in deep meditation it should be less of a problem. I am courious to know how you relax and prepair for the OBE, what do you imagin feel etc. More information might help in finding a better solution for you, because what works for me might not work for you. Hope some of this helps.

wonderbread is correct. Trance here would be the 'Mind Awake Body Asleep' state, and trance induction can be achieved many ways. I'd say, to add to the above relaxation techniques, you can add others, like the 'elevator', 'smoke rings', and 'bubble' technique (which is actually energy body loosening). The AD Pedia has a section devoted to this in the OBE early experiences (check it out), otherwise run a forum search for these terms and you will find more threads about this.

I had this same problem, also the problem with my throat getting too dry -- so now when I attempt WILD I lie on my side, and prop a pillow up so I breathe through my nose instead of my mouth. Breathing through my mouth is what was apparently causing the problem -- when air passes through the nostrils, the sinuses humidify it and the moist air will also cause less saliva to be produced, since the mouth area is no longer dry.

Last night I did a quickie experiment, and laid down on my back and started to relax, then the normal swallowing and dry mouth issues started to happen, it was really annoying me so I got up went and drank some water and decided to sit in my recliner instead. For some reason sitting at an incline instead of flat on my back helped immensely. It was much easier to breath in without the sensation of always having to swallow. Could be just me but I thought it was worth mentioning.
