Sometimes presences seem by instinct evil even if they aren't. This seems to have been reported by OBEers, even by people who had contact with ETs that didn't turn out to be malevolent.

Perhaps this fear goes back to older, deeper parts of our psyche or brain and are automatic things.

What do you mean by The Watcher? Like our guardian or the physical bodies that we see through?

It's an aspect of self that keeps you from venturing out farther than you're psychologically prepared to handle.

For example, I was shown the entrance to a hellrealm last year. I was accompanied by a guardian, and was able to see what I was supposed to see and learn what I was supposed to learn and not freak out. If I had "accidentally" stumbled there three years ago all by myself, I'd probably be in therapy now.
The watcher keeps you safe from your own curiosity, and also helps to teach you lessons. But remember, it is an aspect of self.

I've had a few dream like states where I've been awake but have seen/felt a presence in the room.. First few times it happened I was so scared.. Do you think they know that if they show themselves it will frighten us? I haven't had any contact with my "watcher" lately.. But I've had that tingly sensation (SP) again.. I assume that's the gateway into my OBE.

There is a dark figure which appears in meditative trance , visions , and projections which stands before us not speaking .
The dark watcher appears in a hooded gray to brown cloak ,silently .

The light watcher often appears silent , headless in a purple cloak . In the same way some first see archangels and avatars headless . Their aura radiates so brightly that the face is obsured . The area of the head is full of light so the face can not be seen initially but eventually the magician can see through this radiance a face which becomes their own .

The dark watcher stands on the threshold or the abyss it is a frightening image and some believe they need to offer it bread soaked in blood or urine to appease it . But it is an extension of our self . The light watcher leads us like a higher self towards ascension . The dark watcher leads us to descension and destruction . The watcher may appear with the face of another but this will be the past life of that magician and it will become their own face as they unite with it .
