I don't know if this happens to everyone and therefore just "normal" stuff. Please let me know your experience with either.
About 12 times or so in my adult life, I have heard someone call me name. The last time it happened, I was home alone and I heard my name being called as I almost reached the 1st floor from the basement. It was VERY loud and it sounded like someone said it in my left ear. I was so startled that I actually looked behind me. The other thing that has happened more frequently, is when I am doing something and I hear many voices (all intelligible) talking very fast and confusedly. It is not a good feeling. I have to mentally shake myself to get rid of it. Sometimes I feel like I am having a little tunnel vision with it. And sometimes it is a result of concentrating or something like that. It happened many times when I was a teenager and it always seemed to happen in the same area of the house. I have told my brother and sister this and they get the same/similar thing. Several years ago, someone actually said it may be a symptom of schizoprenia. : ( Thanks, I am really trying to explore some areas of my life and would appreciate some feedback. |

I don't know if this happens to everyone and therefore just "normal" stuff. Please let me know your experience with either. Sometimes certain sounds mimic voices- the shower does it for me- it sounds like a conversation that someone else is having- and of course, those darn hypnagogics. I think most of us have heard our name being called at some point in our lives (for me it was childhood- there was even an old wive's tales told about that when I was growing up, so it stands that is not an unusual phenomenon.) If you are not hearing voices that are constantly tormenting you I wouldn't worry about schizophrenia, but I would advise plenty of rest and stress reduction. |

I am 40 and I have only had the "voices" about 2 dozen times since I was 13. I am very "sane" and don't feel at all that something is wrong with. The voices only last 30 seconds- 2 minutes.
I figured many people have probably heard their named called. I just wonder what is happening because it is so clear. And, you hear voices in hypnagogics? This is the first time I have heard of this. As a side note, yesterday I dreamt I was smelling 2 different perfumes (and actually smelled them). This was a first for me. |

And, you hear voices in hypnagogics? This is the first time I have heard of this. Oh, yeah. I even asked a psychologist about hypnagogic voices and he told me it wasn't a symptom of schizophrenia. Voices are included in the menu of 'astral noises'. Sometimes clear, sometimes vague, sometimes directed at you, sometimes not. If I find the link I'll add it to this post.
Cool thing about the smells. About the closest thing I had like that was dreaming I was eating pancakes, and actually smelling them. Yum! Here we go: http://forums.astraldynamics.com/viewtopic.php?t=1985 |

I have always been the vivid lucid dreaming type, and I often
have all kinds of hypnopompic imagery, both visual and auditory (but not both at once) while slowly waking up from dreams. The sounds are usually in the form of voices, and sometimes I do even hear my name. I always like to wake up slowly from dreams so I can try to re-enter them, and it's those moments when I'm mostly awake, but still close enough to go right back into the dream when I get the most of this. Usually it sounds like unclear voices laughing and talking in the next room. I usually can't make out what they're saying, but from time to time it will be clear enough that they will seem to be talking about me in a sort of "he'll be waking up in a few moments" kind of way. Only in rare cases do they seem to be actually talknig directly to me. The most complex case of this was about a year ago when it sounded like a phone ringing twice (the old bell kind, not one I actually have), and then after two rings, a voice I did not recognize seemed to say "hi, _____ (my name), isn't it about time to wake up?" The "time to wake up" theme is there more often than not. I've never had the experience of hearing my name called when I was actually awake. With me, it's only a part of the hypnopompic hallucinations that I very often get as I'm waking up slowly from a lucid dream. |

I hear 2 different kinds of voices.. when I'm meditating I can hear people having totally irrelevant/random conversations, and they sound like they are in my room.
The other voices I hear are more peculiar and started from a very early age (they stopped when I was around 10 but resumed 7 years later), these sound like the echoing screams of a woman and they get so loud that they distort any external sound, making music for example unbearable to listen to. I was very scared of them as a kid although I was reassured by parents that it was 'nothing'. Obviously I thought there was something wrong with me, but then I realised that these voices would only come when I was in the process of creating (painting, writing, sculpting etc.) and interestingly enough those 7 years that the voices had stopped was when I stopped creating due to feelings of inadequacy (I was a teenager). They are not very frequent, but they only come when I am creating something, at the moment of inspiration. When they do appear now I consider it a good sign, something like a thumbs-up to what I am doing, a form of inspirational channelling. I call the voice Sarah but thats another long story.. |

Usually if your spiritually aware you will hear voices from your guides, totem animals, angels trying to communicate with you or help you with guidance. Somettimes lower energies act as higher energies to fool you. Basically its a kick up the rear end to listen to your intuition more. Those first positive thoughts that come to your mind, also they can send you guidance in forms of vision, repetitive thoughts etc. Somettimes they say your name so you are aware they are near. They try to communicate with you all the time to say hey i'm here you just have to tune into them more. Asking them to enter your dreams is good way to start communication with your guides. It's like a new awakening.

I have a friend who says she was saved from being totalled by a truck because she heard a distinct voice tell her not to move, despite the light having changed green.
CF, what's the old wive's tale? I haven't heard it. As children we often ran inside because we thought our mum was calling when she wasn't. As an adult, if I left my babies home with their dad and went out to get something, I would hear crying and know they'd awakened. On another site, a woman posted that she knew she was pregnant when she'd start hearing babies cry. |

This is an interesting topic as some of it applies to me also.
When I was younger I could hear my name being called and it used to wake me up in the mornings. It sounded like it was my Mom or my Dads voice. I often asked if they had called me, but they just said that it must have been a dream. I also sometimes hear music that wakes me up, only to discover that the same music is on the radio when I turn it on. PLL Rob |
