Sorry, I don't know what you mean, selfishness as a long-term evolutionary benefit? Sparta appears to have followed a similar arc of hyper-militarization, rapid dominance over neighbouring states, and eventual implosion that can be observed in 1930-40's Germany and Italy. Much different time scale, of course, but 2-300 years of eminence doesn't really cut it, does it? Maybe I'm missing the point of your example, feel free to expound
In a grand scheme of course not, but for an individual human 300 years is hardly a short time frame, don't you think? Imagine being born there as a non-citizen in a year 150...

Anyway we need to remember that a common definition of a successful society (wealth, political freedom, opportunity for all citizens, life span etc) is very unlike a purely evolutionary definition. According to the later the amount of offspring and geographical spread of genes is all that matters. The most successful societies at the moment are found in Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa and certain parts of South Asia. Also teen pregnancy is something to be celebrated and encouraged.

Areas which contain some of the larger consumers of charity and aid. Natural forces are not exactly in play here. If they were, there would be no Ethiopia as it is known today, for example.

True, but the "nature" doesn't care how it is achieved... Now they are trapped, but in the distant past when numbers mattered more they would have gone on to conquer their better off neighbors or been destroyed while trying. Not possible anymore due to technological nature of modern warfare.

I really don't understand what's the big deal about what he said. Sure, some people will disagree with that, but being fired from NPR?
I think the deal is, there is clearly a lot of volatility regarding the subject of Muslims at this point in time- and I can see how folks could view his comments as another way where feelings could potentially be stirred up to the point of, say, more attacks against Muslims, in the USA and elsewhere. So, whether one agrees or disagrees with Williams' comments, I'd say his comments were at least pretty ill considered and insensitive on his part, especially as a representative of NPR. However- as to whether he should have been fired....THIS I am not at all sure about. NPR should still be able to handle a certain level of disagreements from its commentators, and feel free to publicly separate itself from this man's opinions, as opposed to the man himself. Still, I'll need to process this....not sure if this is indeed a level of bigotry that should not be tolerated by NPR.

P.S. Here in Chicago, I get cab rides and share public transportation with those in Muslim garb all the time (and have shared planes a few times), and can honestly say that I've never batted an eye (...at least on THIS issue. ) Maybe because I see Muslims all the time?

Truly, what gets ME nervous is the way the rest of y'all dress during TAT Tailgates. Guilt by association, dontchaknow.

Yup!

I'm so ashamed.

But for the record, that wasn't at the Tailgate. That's the Heineken booth outside of Ashe.
