Kennesaw State University student Jessica Colotl studied political science and dreamed of becoming a lawyer until a series of minor traffic violations propelled her to the center of a nationwide debate on illegal immigration.
Colotl's family came undocumented to America from Mexico when she was 11. After she was arrested in late March for driving without a license, the sheriff's office turned her over to immigration officials and put her in an Alabama detention center. Her ordeal was only just beginning. After lobbying by Kennesaw State officials and her sorority sisters, ICE released Colotl last week. Federal officials deferred action on her case for a year, allowing her to complete her classes. But Cobb County Sheriff Neil Warren obtained a new warrant for her arrest on Wednesday, saying she lied about her address when she was booked into jail following her initial arrest. Making a false statement to law enforcement is a felony under Georgia law. If Colotl is convicted on the felony charge of making a false statement, it will be virtually impossible to get a judge to agree to extend the deferral, [Colotl's immigration lawyer Charles] Kuck said. But he said he is almost positive that the district attorney will dismiss those charges. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/0..._n_578767.html |

As a legal resident of a second country, leaving my homeland (how I hate that word) due to political reasons, stories like this one really split me.
On the one hand, I would never live somewhere illegally. The reason I went through the whole issue to be legal in my new country was for me to have rights and duties. It is what I do not have in my original country. So all this recent talk about immigration and illegal aliens, to me, boils down to: you are here, Illegally!!! You have no rights because you started the whole thing illegally. And then I remember all the places I have been in my life, where people have absolutely no chance of prosperity and a decent life, and I wonder what I would do if I were a "wetback" staring across the Mediterranean towards France or Spain. Still, the gist of Kirkus' original complaint about the article is so on the money: does that give her better rights? Had she been a stripper should she have been treated differently? I'll wait for some more insights from TAT before making up my mind on this one. |
