Yup.

Here's what saturated roadbeds look like when they fail.

Funny this never happened when bush was president...

I wonder how old that bridge & rail is??

@ the right place @ the right time........

It is really windy here today & a few years ago I went kayaking on a day like this, & as it was so windy I hugged the tree line as I wanted to block as much of the wind as I could.........

After going about about 5 miles I returned the same route & to my surprise & horror a huge oak had fallen into the water...... I was guessing it was about 75-100 years old.......

As I paddle out into the windy middle away from the trees I could not help but think that in all the time that tree had been there I missed it falling on me by less than an hour..........

was there even a bridge? or even a culvert pipe? I kept replaying it thinking... this isn't a regular flowing river is it?

Obama's fault. Gotta be. After all, he controls gas prices...everything is his fault. Hey...my allergies are flaring up. Damn Obama.

Although you can't really see it (it's probably deep), my guess is that there's a failed (plugged/iced over) culvert there somewhere.

The water backs up (you can see a little ponding when he runs away the first time), saturates the fill and then it just busts through.

The key is that the guy was paying attention and stopped when he saw the ballast on the shoulder had sloughed a little.

Some inspectors would have went past it, not thinking it was a big deal at that point.

Did you notice how close the hirails on the siding were at first...and then they moved them.

To Bill - The age of the ties/rail isn't a concern and the track was still in great shape, as evidenced by very few ties falling off when it opened up.
