If England wins the World Cup I will shave my head bald and give away all my tokenz.
Question. Can England really win the World Cup? My heart says yes. But my head says no chance in hell. Agreed. We have some of the greatest talents in World football. With Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard the two main cogs that get the English machine well and truly in overdrive, but can the rest of the team rise to the challenge? 11/2 (various firms) is a ludicrous price for a nation who have failed to really set the international scene alight since that summer’s day in 1966. There have been glimpses of brilliance in recent tournaments, remember Waddle and Pearce’s penalty misery in Italia ‘90 and who can forget Gazza’s outstretched boot centimetres away in Euro 96 against Germany. I don't think we will. I hope we do sure, but I still think we have 11 individuals in many ways and not quite the basis of an efficent team. I would say Spain have a better team than us, Brazil do. Also the teams that maybe don't always shine but always seem to do well in tournaments (i.e Germany,Italy).
I think the goalkeeper situation is a long way from being sorted, the defence doesn't convince me, and up front I don't believe for one minute Wayne Rooney has a partner he feels 100% happy with. Do not pick Heskey, maybe Crouch can do the job, maybe Bent can, maybe Owen can, maybe Carlton Cole can. But it's all maybe's. |

Well history may not play such a huge part of the original quote says. For example Spain are a lot of peoples favourites and their history in the tournament is even worse than ours. Greece won Euro 2004 (admittedly a smaller tourno) with even less history on their side, so the history part of the quote is just an anomaly to me.
The real question is are we good enough. And to me, the answer is no in terms of winning it. We're better than we were a year or two back, and with luck (players staying fit and in some type of form, the draw working out well) I could see us making the semi finals which truly would be a huge success. There are weak points, not much cover in certain positions in the team, an over reliance on some players, perhaps a lack of a plan B (we have to see on that) but we have four or five truly world class players and an exceptional coach so I'm hopeful |

dont forget td,we'll have potential match winners sitting on the bench in the form of beckham and defoe.....you ask people from all the favourites and they'll tell you they have weak positions in they're teams |
