That was in the FA Cup. There was time allowed for that replay, with this there is no real time with the other competitions.

That Kanu situation wouldn't happen these days as the rule states now that play may go on if a player is injured unless the referee sees that the injury is serious (i.e a head wound) so it's up to the team on the ball to kick it out of play.

As I said, if this had been granted then the backlog of games would be huge. This season wouldn't end until 2012.
i still maintain you need to fix the problem, video repaly would do it, most major league sports in North America use it very effectively

I am for video technology, dont get me wrong. I would love to see it get brought in. I dont think it'd be too hard to implement. I would give each manager 2 opportunities in a game to query a decision, so as not to abuse it.

in the NFL if the coach challenges and is proved wrong he loses a timeout, your manager's dont use timeouts but maybe once per half would be a restriction

there can be no doubt that if the Henry incident was reviewed the goal would not have been allowed

But FIFA claims not every level of the game would be able to afford video replays.

Right let's just say FIFA had granted Irelands replay.

Now tomorrow in the Premier League Liverpool play Manchester City, lets say it's 1-1 in the 85th minute. Yossi Benayoun goes through, dives to win a penalty (everyone can see its a dive apart from the match officials) and Liverpool score the penalty and win 2-1. Now City can turn around if they so wished and say "We want a replay". And because FIFA have granted Ireland their rematch Manchester City would have to get a replay as it wouldn't be fair.

See, it would have been a dangerous precedent to set. And it wouldn't have just been City, it would have been Man United, it would have been Chelsea, it would have been Stockport County. Basically every team that feel they have had a decision go against them would have had the right to a replay.

As I said, there was time for that replay to happen. With this it's more difficult with all the fixture congestion nowadays and the rules that exist whereby players aren't allowed to play too many games.

But ask yourself a few questions. Is Henry a cheat? Yes. Would he do that again? Perhaps. Would you in his situation have owned up to the referee? it's easy to say yes but bear in mind it's the difference between you going to the World Cup and not going. So now answer it.

just once just once i would like to see these very well paid sportsmen and woman to take account of their actions, he admitted it was a handball after the game ut said something like " I am not the Ref what can I do"

well DURING the game at the moment he could have said "Ref I handled it, disallow the goal" - he would have the respect of everyone and in all honesty event eh French media would back him - This is the precedent I want to see being set - then we would start a trend of not accepting the kind of behaviors we have seen from the likes of Drogba diving, Ronaldo and the like

I remember last season Arsenal were playing Portsmouth. Andrei Arshavin goes through and goes down, clearly a dive and he told the referee he took a dive and asked for him not to give the penalty. The referee ignored him, kept faith with his original decision to give the penalty and Arsenal scored from it.

So even if Henry had told the referee, the goal may not have been disallowed as its already happened and the referee's dont like to go back on their decisions.

That writer isn't Irish though... He says so himself.

Also, he describes Britain's anger at Maradonna. As usual some yank with no clue has made the mistake of thinking Britain is England.

Look, this could have happened at any time. I know it happened in a massive game and everything and it cost ireland but it could happen in the Premier league this weekend, it could happen in the Champions league next week. It's just a case of there you are.

I mean if we had every games replayed that had somethnig happen in it that cost a team then the backlog of games would be huge. I mean Bristol City vs Crystal palace earlier this season (I think) had that goal that never was, there was that phantom goal last season at watford, there was the famous Pedro mendes goal at Old Trafford, there was Stephane Henchoz in the cup final handling the ball on the line......I could go on.
you forgot tottenhams goal at old trafford
