ESPN The Magazine Announces 'Body Issue' Athletes

Body Issue Features Explore the Athletic Form – Inside & Out
Carl Edwards, Dwight Howard, Adrian Peterson & Serena Williams Among Athletes Featured
ESPN The Magazine's inaugural “Body Issue,” on newsstands Friday, Oct. 9, will feature nearly 80 athletes from a variety of sports in a celebration and exploration of the athletic form. The issue honors athletes of diverse shapes, sizes, genders and races within the boundaries of taste and frontiers of creativity upon which ESPN The Magazine and ESPN have built their reputations. It is a testament to the work the athletes do, the effort they exert and the price they sometimes pay in reliance on their most important asset – their bodies.

Features in the Body Issue explore the athletic form, inside and out – literally. Body Issue editorial topics include: the largest genetic test of current and former athletes to examine their genetic mapping, athletes’ use of sexuality to promote themselves, a first-hand look at an athlete’s ACL surgery, insuring the athletic body and what video game companies know about the athletic body and the process they go through to create the video game representation of star athletes.

Laure Manaudou, famous for being the first French gold medal winner in women's Olympics swimming (2004) and for photos of her naked in bed, has retired, saying Heninesquely: "It came to me little by little. I didn’t make it on impulse. It has matured slowly.”

She is rumored to be pregnant. Also, rumors that she will unretire for the 2012 Olympics.

The 2008 Olympics was in China, the 2010 will be in Vancouver, the 2012 Olympics will be in London, 2014 will be in Sochi.

The last Olympics here in the US was the 2002 Olympics. The last Olympics in Japan was the 1998 Nagano Olympics, while the last one in Spain was the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. No country from South America has hosted the Olympic Games.

The choice is really up in the air. I can't see the IOC giving three straight Olympics to Europe. They did give the 2014 games to Sochi after London won, so Tokyo or Chicago may get to host 2016 even if Beijing and Vancouver just hosted. I agree that the IOC may not be willing to give it to Rio just yet.

Personally I would like Tokyo to get it for selfish reasons. I want to go back to Asia for around three months in 2016, and maybe spend a week to watch the Olympics in Japan if I can get tickets.

It's "a bunch of narcissists that want to sit and type stuff about themselves all the time," Texas Tech coach Mike Leach said. "We'll put mirrors in some of their lockers if that's necessary but they don't have to Twitter."

A day after the Red Raiders lost to No. 12 Houston 29-28, Leach was running late to a meeting. According to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, linebacker Marlon Williams asked on his Twitter account why "the head coach can't even be on time."

Plus, the Texas Tech captain Brandon Carter was suspended indefinitely Sunday for violating team rules. After the loss, he tweeted: "This is not how I saw our season."

Clowney sat out the Jets' 24-17 win over Tennessee on Sunday. His offense? After the Jets beat New England the previous week, he tweeted: "1 play in the 1st Half, 4 plays in the 2nd half ... A bit disappointed about my playing time but very happy and satisfied about the win."
"I was upset with him, yep," Ryan said Monday. "For a couple of reasons. One of them is you'll hear things if a guy's unhappy or whatever. I'm not a big Twitter guy, but you hear different things."

I think the new rule makes sense. I know when I'm tweeting or texting I can't concentrate on anything else, so why not pay attention to practice or the game or the team meeting and tweet afterwards?

Richard Gasquet (tennis) - French kissing

In March, the Frenchman tested positive for cocaine at the Miami Masters. Gasquet pleaded his innocence, maintaining that the drug must have got into his system via a waitress, whom he had spent the previous night kissing. The explanation was initially greeted with derision, but Gasquet took the case to an independent tribunal, which heard he "kissed her at least seven times, each kiss lasting about five to 10 seconds". The 23-year-old also argued successfully that - unknown to him - his companion was a regular drug user, and subsequent forensic evidence sealed the deal. The two-year ban was reduced to two months, and Gasquet is now back in competition.

Dennis Mitchell (athletics) - Beer and sex

US sprinter Mitchell tested positive in 1998 for an excessive level of testosterone. He blamed the sky-high reading on his activities the previous night, when he said he drunk five bottles of beer and had sex with his wife four times. His defence claimed: "It was her birthday, the lady deserved a treat." Amazingly, the American authorities bought Mitchell's explanation, but the IAAF were less indulgent. He was banned for two years. Mitchell later testified against his former coach Trevor Graham in the infamous BALCO case. In an unrelated aside, Mitchell shares his name with the US version of comic book tearaway Dennis the Menace.

Ross Rebagliati (snowboarding) - Passive smoking

Rebagliati won the Giant Slalom in the men's snowboarding competition at Nagano, the first time the sport had been included in the Winter Olympics. The IOC had hoped to add a hint of youthful rebellion to the games but got more than they bargained for. The Canadian lost his medal when traces of THC - a chemical found in marijuana smoke - were found in his urine. Rebagliati protested his innocence, saying he had inhaled the smoke passively at a pre-Olympic party. He was eventually reinstated, mainly on the basis that marijuana does not enhance athletic performance. The repentant Rebagliati pledged to "wear a gas mask" at future parties.

Adri van der Poel (cycling) - Pigeon pie

Cycling has had more than its share of doping controversies, but excuses do not come more outlandish than Dutchman Van der Poel's in 1983 after he who tested positive for strychnine, which acts as a stimulant when used in small doses. He blamed it on a pigeon pie served for Sunday lunch. Little did he know, Van der Poel explained, that the birds were his father-in-law's racing pigeons which had been doped with strychnine. Van der Poel came back, won several one-day classics and two Tour de France stages, and eventually retired in 2000.

I read somewhere that the inclusion of golf and rugby brings the event total back to 28. Baseball and softball were removed from the Olympics to make room for these other two sports. Those Olympic bureaucrats really do hate America even though America with its TV money basically finances the whole games.

Let's not forget all of A-Rod's women have caused media problems for the Yankees. His wife Cynthia, his bromance with Jeter , the various mistresses he's been caught with, Madonna, and now Kate Hudson. What the Yanks really need to do is get rid of A-Rod.
