Default 2010 Winter Olympics thread *SPOILERS*
WHISTLER, Canada — Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili suffered a life-threatening crash after flying off the Olympic track on Friday and smashing into a metal column.

The 21-year-old, who was knocked unconscious, was immediately placed on a stretcher with blood pouring from his face before he was taken away in an ambulance.

An air ambulance called to the track which is regarded as one of the fastest in the sport.

"Georgian slider Nodar Kumaritashvili has had a serious crash in the final run of official training for the men's singles on Friday," said an official statement.

"The 21-year-old fell out of the track when he crashed. He was treated onsite by medical staff who administered CPR and was then taken away in an ambulance."

It is understood that Kumaritashvili suffered the crash during his second training run at one of the fastest points near the bottom of the track on the final 270-degree turn.

He crashed into both sides of the wall before being hurled over the top.

Witnesses said Kumaritashvili then hit a metal pole on the side of the track after he flew over the wall.

I was just going to post this. Video and pics are on HuffPost. There is blood so if you're squeamish you're being warned.

I'm watching tennis instead of the Olympics right now and hoping not to miss the speed skating.

Has competition started? If it has, only prelims, right?

I read the same, and that it isn't an official announcement yet because they have yet to notify his parents. Such a tragic start to the games.

NBC coverage started at 2p Eastern. I assume it's prelims but it's still exciting.

Very sad indeed, but Georgian luger??? That sounds an awful lot like Jamaican bobsley and only just short of Eddy the Eagle. Luge could be very dangerous for those not fully prepared...

Medal events start only tomorrow. I'll try to wait for Opening ceremony, but I'm sleepy already so maybe not...

The Winter Olympics are so hard to watch for me. Most of the sports are so incredibly dangerous... Even figure skating can yield very serious injuries.

My heart goes out to his family and all of Georgia... This has to sting a country that has been stinging for a long, long time.

How tragic. Will make for a somewhat sombre start to the games.

This is a schedule of events. The only competition (as opposed to practice runs) today is qualification for ski jumping (and the final is tomorrow morning).

Absolutely not...

Unless you count sliding down a hill to the lower part of the barn in barn boots using a 5-gallon bucket full of feed instead of poles...

Skiing scares me to death.

I love skiing both downhill (just a beginner) and cross country (better at this) and I think it gives me an extra respect for those athletes. 70 mph on two thin pieces of plastic is .

I love the opening ceremony!

I don't see any coverage on NBC.
