ESPN's going live tonight at 8:30 with (gasp!) primetime soccer, all in honor of David Beckham.

I thought I would have plans tonight, but that fell through so I'm definitely watching. I'm more interested to see how the crowd receives him. Anyone else planning on tuning in?

I wonder how seriously Chelsea will take this game. LA better hope not very seriously at all...

ESPN actually has a really funny commercial where they show Madrid fans deflating soccer balls and ripping down Beckham posters. I thought it was pretty clever.

Well, no. LOL! But the way he's being hyped, you'd think he was the Messiah. He's all over the place. And as has been pointed out, he probably won't even be able to play due to injury.

Actually they do. It's not popular as a spectator sport (not yet at least), but lot of kids play it. In fact only baseball/softball is played by more people in US these days.

I was trying to be nasty, I know they play football (which I prefer to call it, and I won't be like Beckham who quickly apologise to the Americans for daring to call it football in a press conference) in the US.

I really don't follow MLS so it's neither here not there for me what Beckham does. BTW are they still ruining the sports by playing Quarters instead of halfs?

To be honest I have no idea as I have never followed it either...

I don't care so much for Beckham, but it would be great if he could make the game more popular here. I am sceptical though...

I watched with a friend. Chelsea won 1-0 on a goal from Capt. Terry, no surprise. Beckham came in around 77:30, and was clearly in pain. The crowd gave him a huge ovation. I think they recognized he probably shouldn't have even walked out in the first place.

There was a clear distinction in quality tonight. LA looked to be in a confused state for most of the game; in fact I'd say they're lucky they kept it so close. Landon Donovan had a chance to tie in the second half, but over-hit a header. Watching this, you have to wonder if Beckham started to second guess himself. It was only a couple of months ago he took La Liga with Real Madrid.

It's funny because they had kept it to a "friendly exhibition," until Beckham came in. Then things actually grew semi-intense. Jose Mourinho had said before the game that his team realized it was just an exo and they would "let Beckham do his thing." Whether he could or not is another issue, but when he stepped out on the pitch, the game took on a different atmosphere.
