Nike has too much of ego. They need to put their stamp on everything, even with some douchey slogan like this. No need for those shirts, IMO. They just wanted to get in on the buzz.
I think they'd have their buzz by having the team wear "championship" shirts... the douchy slogan was just misguided.

I say post. If brett can't keep himself from clicking into the thread, that's his problem. If you can't post here, where are you going to post? Twitter?
Not to be picky, but this thread was for the previous match. If someone had started an "Olympic Women's Football Finals" thread, I would have stayed out of it. TJD is correct though that his post was w/i the rules as it was on live.

Usually those cards are awarded on a goal kick or free kick, dead ball. If the play is live and a card is given for time wasting, you have to award the indirect kick. My point is, the game wasnt lost on that referee action, it was lost on the hand ball and the inability to rebound in extra time.

I didnt see it live, but if the ref felt the need to make that call, she must have been clearly wasting time.
I know very little about soccer, but I was watching when that happened and I figured it was warranted. It was blatant, IMO, and I just fugured that was the consequence all the time.

It was still fun to see in the replay.
Curious though how the IOC feels about those T-shirts worn TJD mentions. They did not look like officially sanctioned Olympic wear.
i doubt they care since they brought out a guy who has derided women's soccer regularly to award the medals.

After the United States beat Japan to get the gold, they were given some t-shirts to put on. Little did they know that people would be disgusted by it.

It’s pretty common for a team to put on some sort of championship t-shirt after a big win, at least here in the USA. They don’t exactly make congratulations on winning a gold medal shirts, though. The US defeated Japan to win the gold, and now they are in some hot water for their after-game shirts.

The shirts were from Nike, a major sponsor, and read ‘Greatness Has Been Found’. Talk about rubbing it in your opponents face. Not exactly what the world would like to see. According to Yahoo, many of the writers covering the event lashed out at Team USA on twitter after seeing the shirts.

Ladies, there is a time and place for showboating, but it may have been timed badly. Now we’ll no doubt have to hear Hope Solo cry about how everyone is picking on her via twitter. Oh joy.

The US women's football team wore Nike t-shirts with a smug, tacky slogan reading "Greatness Has Been Found" after its gold medal win over Japan on Thursday. The shirts were roundly panned on Twitter, from critics both foreign and domestic.
Members of the team were handed the shirts immediately after their win. This is a ritual common after big victories in American team sports. After the Super Bowl or NCAA basketball title game, for instance, winning teams immediately put on shirts and hats that proclaim them champions.
If it's ever happened at an Olympics, I can't remember. Throw in the phrase "greatness has been found" - which would be distasteful enough on a team celebrating a minor championship-- and the whole thing feels completely out of place.
Ben Rothenberg of the New York Times tweeted, "'Greatness has been found,' but not humility. Gross."
SI.com's Courtney Nguyen agreed. "Put those t-shirts away, USA." she tweeted. "Keep it classy."
No one is blaming the women on the team. They were handed shirts and put them on, as expected. And I don't blame Nike either: every 13-year-old girl who's ever picked up a football is begging for one right now. The people at fault are the go-betweens for Nike and Team USA. They should have realised the way those shirts could have been perceived.
Wearing a personalised shirt at an Olympics that seems to rub the loss in face of defeated opponents plays into the stereotype of ugly Americanism. If people who were rooting for the women's football team found them off-putting, imagine the reaction of the rest of world.
I'm all for showing off the greatness of the United States and our sporting teams. At an Olympics, there's an easy way to do it: stand on top of the podium while "The Star Spangled Banner" plays. It gets the job done better than any marketing gimmick could.

Personally, I couldn't agree more with this. I really wish the team would have said, "No thanks" to Nike after seeing the wording.

I actually found it disconcerting as well. I am not sure I have ever seen anything like it at an Olympic event.
