Default Team USA uniforms made in China
Who was the brainiac who allowed this to happen?

Our toys are made in China. Most of our appliances and durable goods come from China. A good percentage of the inventory at the most popular stores in America are filled with Chinese-made goods. Most of the apple juice and garlic products sold in the U.S. come from - you guessed it - China.

So, should we be surprised that the U.S. Olympic team uniforms were made in China? Perhaps not. Disappointed? I should say so.

These aren't consumer commodities that needed to be purchased on the cheap. In fact, you'd have to drop more than $1,000 to buy the full uniform because of its Ralph Lauren branding - not because of its Chinese manufacturing.

"I am so upset. I think the Olympic committee should be ashamed of themselves," Reid was quoted by the AP as saying a news conference today. "I think they should be embarrassed. I think they should take all the uniforms, put them in a big pile and burn them and start all over again."

Lawmakers from both parties agreed "Made in China" wasn't the best sign to have posted inside the clothing required to be worn be all U.S. athletes. The U.S. team also wore Chinese made Ralph Lauren outfits at the 2008 Olympics. But those games were actually in China.

The U.S. Olympic Committee responded that it is privately funded and appreciates the support it receives from the clothing company.

What do you think? Should the athletes ditch the outfits and just wear jeans? Should the U.S. team clothing be required to be made in the U.S.? Or is all this fuss over nation of origin a lot to do over nothing?

It may be bad P/R but since this is done by a private organization - which happens to be an American Company - and the whole Olympic movement in this country is privately funded, this is just political grandstanding. If they really cared they could have put pressure on Ralph Lauren, who has been doing US Unis for quite awhile and nobody has said anything, a long time ago to make these in the US. Two weeks before the Olympics is a silly time for this stuff.

to add Ralph Lauren was probably picked in the first place from the faux patriotism from a lot of his products bearing an american flag with an RL.

I doubt they planned to wait 2 weeks before the Olympics started to express outrage. If the story broke sooner would that have made a difference? Oddly enough, it appears that both political parties are united on this, so I don't see this as grandstanding. (Aside from Harry Reids comments.) Personally, I would not say I am outraged. And I don't care that the uni's are privately funded. I am Just disappointed Ralph Lauren could not find an American company to make them.

You better check every flag that is in your house. I bet you will find most of those - especially the smaller ones - are not made in the USA. I would also ask every politician that wears a flag pin on their lapel if they are made in the USA, and every suit they wear as well.
It is the way it is.

you said you were disappointed Ralph Lauren couldn't find an American Company to make them. Ralph Lauren is an American company. What you should have said you're disappointed the USOC couldn't find an American company that manufactures its products in the USA. Are you also outraged at foreign companies that sponser US olympic teams?

Ralph Lauren is an American company.
They contract out a lot of their production, if not all of it.

They could have contracted an American supplier. I doubt they have any, though.

Yes Yes I know, America is infiltrated with Chinese products. (The flag at my house was made in USA btw) I know there are some Olympic haters here, but I for one, love the Olympics. I am proud of the athletes that represent the USA, is it wrong to want them wearing American made products?

If this was the 1980 Olympics and our shit was being made in "The Soviet Union" I could see you taking issue.

Politicians will jump on anything they can in an election year to make themselves look *patriotic*. Fact is, this is two weeks before the olympics. most of these toolbags didn't even KNOW about this shit until a news story brought it to their attention. If you cared, you'd have already known, fucko's. Go do something more important, like......your jobs.

I feel the same way, and certainly would have loved to have seen these garments MIUSA, but as I know from personal experience it is almost impossible to make tailored clothing in this country unless you are some small designer company - we were forced to stop manufacturing our own suits, etc in '97 as one of the last in what was once the 2nd biggest garment manufacturing area next to NYC because it was just too expensive to stay in the $ range the retailers wanted to pay -and I am sure Ralph Lauren is in the same boat.
This is a conundrum that unfortunately I live w/ every day.

Athletes these days get paid millions of dollars to wear specific athletic apparel from Nike, Adidas, Fila, or whatever. All of that stuff is made in China, yet very little is ever said about that. They can't take part of the millions of endorsement and get it made here? Yet very few people care.

Wrong? No...you want what you want.

It's also not wrong that the wear whatever they were given to wear, or for whoever is providing them to try and get the biggest bang for their buck while not breaking laws. That's as American as it gets.
