The presentation was excellent and atmosphere brilliant.

Congratulations to all concerned.

I’ve had several non-fencing friends ask me if the whole event was choreographed and staged as it was so great to watch. They felt the fencers were putting on a performance for the audience!
Can we finally persuade sponsors that fencing IS a spectator sport?

Long week ? I'm sure she's been married a good while.
My old coach (also Jim Philbin's) still refers to her as Hillary Cawthorne.

My family and I were very lucky to get to 4 sessions (WET and MFT). We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We'd seen the set up on the telly so were not surprised nevertheless still in awe. Has there been any better staging anywhere in the world? I'd love to see that if there was.

We found everything from getting to the hotel, hotel to venue, security, venue, facilities (subject to the one water point) very very good. Made even better by the ranks of games makers. I felt so proud of the job everyone was doing and how GB was being potrayed. Excellent!

Couple of hiccups over names of fencers (we're all human) and some video reffing decisions that make me question whether I should bother trying to get the next level ref qualification as I'd have overturned some (what I thought were) outrageous decisions. And will we all now card for the Joppich like head tilt as carded in the semi v Japan?

The 1 hour plus appeal in the WE semi I put down to FIE and not the London 2012 organisers.

So overall a first class job. Skill Drama Controversy Emotion => Fencing

- Given the excellent piste lights, can we now ditch the mask lights? They are gimicky and don't add anything. Besides which, what with all the white coloured masks going around the green light is very hard to see. I realise that people will say they're useful for close-ups but if all the TV feeds have the imposed lights in the corner then they're unnecessary.
They're more for the referee's benefit than spectators as they are closest to the action of the blades

My only small wish was that the ranking number appeared on the screens against each fencer. Breaking the display into four quarters also made it harder to understand the progression of the competition.
I thought the scoreboard with the tableaux looked as though it had been developed for a 80x25 VT100 (Picture here for those of you too young to remember them) and not been updated since. Definitely the worst and most confusing parts of the display. Does anyone think showing the score for the red side in red and the green side in green would be a better idea than showing the person in the lead in green and the person behind in red?

I would vote for the number of reviews left to be on the score displays above the piste. Also an inset showing the referee on the video too.

I agree with this. All the feedback I've had from non-fencers who went was that the presentation was brilliant, but it was hard to tell what was going on - especially on the early matches when you get into double lights and appeals and can't see the refs because they're standing in the dark.

Agree - also having the referee explain the penalty (as in American Football - "Pass Interference, Number 56, Defence, half the distance to the goal line, still first down") or even having it displayed would be good.

So long as they don't start bringing out the 1st down chains when someone gains a meter...

But yeah...I can follow "attack, parry-riposte off target" in French, but the longer exchanges are way beyond me.

Just remember folks, where information is concerned, less is more.

We had this discussion here over the past day or so. And realised that while yes, we do want more information, it's damn easy to be in a position where the fencing takes up a 2 inch square in the middle of screen.

Let's not get carried away. We're not American.
