You can see the power Cerioni has over the Italians. The fencers were far more concerned about him than what the referee was saying.
For me, the splitting of decisions and the application of the rules was inconsistent and not just in the final. The Italians were asked consistently to put their masks back on and were carded only once. The Japanese were carded almost the only time they were warned which lead to a red when they were also warned for covering. Overall I think the Italians were on the positive side of decisions 4 times in the final. I really do not understand the decision making on slomos. I was working the cameras for 3 of the foil days and there were a lot of decisions which, to me, we're blindingly obvious should be changed and yet were not and vice versa. One consistent thing I did see was that a beat attack, which which looked blindingly clear at full speed, always seemed to have a delay between the beat and extension. I suspect that is just a function of the slow motion. |
