There is one great advantage in naming the Universe as my higher power. It exists.

Excellent observation. Well, unless you are one of those Buddhists who claim that nothing exists. Of course, if they don't exist then we don't have to listen to them.

If nothing exists, that includes the people who say that nothing exists. So, why do they say it -- if the people they are talking to don't exist, either? Oh, yes. Nothingness is unstable.

What do we mean when we say -- "Nothing exists? If it exists, how can it be nothing?

Hehehe. You stop trying to confuse me!

Pretty good logic though, I think.

Speaking of a higher power though - I think I would have to put the IRS up there pretty high. They have the power to take money away from me whether I want them to or not.

The "Infernal Revenue Service? That would be a lower power.

Yes, perhaps I really do consider them to be such.

Restrained language has more impact than expletives. Besides, we are "clergy."

Thank you. I expect that we are in general agreement. Shock words have lost the power to shock. Vulgarity shows weakness. Understated civility, tends to have way more impact.

Well, two days ago I resisted the temptation to get into a good arguement after being insulted and just remained silent.

I doubt that I could have engaged in that arguement in a civil manner so I just opted out.

Could that be viewed as apathetic?

remember:"better to remain silent and be thought foolish, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt".

I don't know who said it. "Never try to teach a pig to sing. It does no good and it annoys the pig."
On a related note, there is -- "No matter how hard you try; you can not baptise a cat."

Sometimes, it's not apathy. Sometimes, it's wisdom.

Yeah, well, I like to think I used wisdom but it might have been, afterall, just apathy.

But yeah, I like both of those quotes. Some things are not meant to be done.

In the Summer of 1982, I was a counselor in a "special" camp. This camp was for people with mental retardation, neurological conditions and "emotional disability." Nobody had to tell me not to argue with the campers. When confronted by people who lack the ability to reason -- there is no point in trying to persuade.

Life is too short to argue with fools.

Or to be even too close to them.

They all probably needed a higher power.

This thread has gone cold.

I have been in some conversations where I was asked about my "higher power." I say, "The Universe."

So far, so good. I get a few odd looks, but no real arguments.
Gone cold. Oh well. Even the weather does that in the winter.

Higher Power? Well, yeah, we are children of the Universe. We are star stuff. We should thank all the stars that went "Boom!" for creating the stuff that we are made from.
