And that's why the self-belief forum is here, and has been for a long time.

Well, I already believe in myself.

Ooops. Wrong subject.

Oh well.

Mine is the 500 gigavolt powerlines just south of here.

Hehehe. Yeah, higher power is when you plug an 110VAC appliance into a 220VAC circuit.

Default Higher Power?
Over coffee with a potential new friend, she asked, "Who or what is your higher power?" The strange answer that came out of my mouth was "me." There is no one higher than me. I explained that I didn't believe in God. That I turned to a book of quotes when I was looking for higher wisdom. She said, "So its the collective thinking of the group that is your higher power." I said, "No, that is "group think." I fancy myself as thinking for myself. I don't just accept words of wisdom written by others, I think about them and dig down to see if I believe them to be true or not.

Okay, many of you have read my posts over the years. Help me out here. What do you see as my higher power? Or do I even have one? And is it okay to be my own higher power?

Well, I think you did very well with that. Yes, that is you based on our conversations on this forum. No, I don't consider you as having a problem.

(Well, okay, one problem I am aware of. You want to lose weight but you keep procrastinating. That is a problem. Either decide that your weight doesn't matter (really it does) and stop concerning yourself with it or decide that you will live a more balanced (and enjoyable) life if you get rid of some of the extra weight.)

There. I said it. Hehehe.

Hi DoJ,

I agree with JimBob. I don't think you have a problem and I've always thought that's the way one is supposed to do it - decide for yourself from the data around you what rings true for you. If it doesn't, throw it out.

Everybody gets to decide for themselves what the truth is.

Peace,

Nightsoul

In my understanding of things you are doing fine. Each and everyone of us has to decide what his/her "higher power" will be. That is what the ULC is all about. You are your own higher power. Nothing wrong with that.

It appears that everyone who's replied so far has agreed. I will not however!! How can you be so arrogant???

Just kidding, all right, yeah, I agree too!

You are a reflection of the universe and the universe is reflected in you. How could you not be your own higher power? You have an astute, analytical and curious mind; you are a higher power.

There will be 2 cents charge for this affirmation!!

Mark, we are on the same page. There is no one higher than me. But have you ever tried to explain that to others? They don't get or won't accept it.

saddly doj yes .

try explaining buddhism as a philosophy,a guideline on how to live, not a set of rules.being responsible for our own outcomes,as a result of our actions.you understand it without all the labels.most people won't.

in truth, you won't explain it to those who need someone else to excuse them(ie:god, the devil, whatever).

In this case, "higher" power is less than useful imagry. "Connective" power would be more to the point. Like waves in the ocean. The ocean is the connecting power for the waves.

I think this perspective is consistent with Buddhism, which also sees a connection between all things -- without invoking God or gods.

Or to be even too close to them.

They all probably needed a higher power.
They had the counseling staff. Not really "higher." Most of the staff drank a lot. A few of us stood out by our sobriety.

Gone cold. Oh well. Even the weather does that in the winter.

Higher Power? Well, yeah, we are children of the Universe. We are star stuff. We should thank all the stars that went "Boom!" for creating the stuff that we are made from.
There is one great advantage in naming the Universe as my higher power. It exists.
