Default Christianity in America Continues to Decline
PRINCETON, NJ -- This Christmas season, 78% of Americans identify with some form of Christian religion, a proportion that has been declining in recent decades. The major reason for this decline has been an increase in the percentage of Americans claiming no religious identity, now at 13% of all adults.

The trend results are based on annual averages of Gallup's religious identity data in America that stretch back over 60 years. One of the most significant trends documented during this period is the substantial increase in the percentage of American adults who don't identify with any specific religion. In 1948, only 2% of Americans did not identify with a religion. That percentage began to rise in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Eleven years ago, in 1998, 6% of Americans did not identify with a religion, a number that rose to 10% by 2002. This year's average of 13% of Americans who claim no religious identity is the highest in Gallup records.

The majority of Americans are probably not Christians. IOW, some people who may claim to be Christian are not true Christians. Proof? The words of the Founder: “Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from Me, you evildoers!'” (See Matthew 7.)

Yes, Dig may respond that I’m one of those evildoers. That’s okay, but regardless of whether I pass or fail, Christ’s words still stand true. Many who claim to be Christian will find that they never were.

The decline is not restricted to Christianity. There is a corresponding decline in Judaism too...http://www.simpletoremember.com/vitals/crisis.pdf

Prove it.
How about starting by proving that all the statements attributed to Jesus originated with that guy and weren't "enhanced" in translation, for the institutional benefit of the folks doing the translation.

Eternal damnation unless you do exactly what I say (and not any of these other charlatan fake churches) is a damn convenient way to make people give you money and power.

Would that include the new conservative version of the Bible ?

Ask humber if he thinks tax dollars should go to pulling kids out of school for his alternative "creation science" lessons. He doesn't just want to force his opinion on you, he wants the state of PA to pay him to force it on your kids.

I sort of remember mentioning that in a past post. Don't forget religion is big business. Hook them young.

Only if we can succesfully block out the message of all the other less than 100% accurate viewpoints can the most souls be saved. So give me money so we can save more souls. And what the hell, shouldn't a Messenger of the Gospel have a nice car, nice clothes, be able to influence politicians personally? Its all about saving souls, after all.

The Lord giveth and he giveth like a mother! Welcome to the Church of the Divine Profit. We welcome all denominations, especially twenties, fifties, and hundreds! My coworker's mother had an interesting term for these preachers with fancy cars and clothes and such - "pulpit pimps."

Cut backs, layoffs, selling land and facilities. Is it the recession or just more of an existing trend as young people shun mega churches ? The article mentions people under 40 are less likely to attend the mega churches and attend smaller venues.

This thought was my introduction to fundamentalist christianity when I was in college. I had a "friend" who was born again (some of us had a perfectly good birth the first time) and he bluntly informed me that I was not a christian because I was Roman Catholic.....How did a small fringe group of anti science, anti intellectual and anti reality lunatics become deciders of anything? You're part of the most dangerous group in America.

That is the reason that I keep asking Humber if Roman Catholics are Christians. When I was growing up even the YMCA would not let us join.
It seems as if He thinks that He is preaching at church and is confused by the people He is preaching to asking questions. He doesn't realize that most of the people on this forum are not sheep and He is not our shepherd.

He will never answer the question. He is part of a dangerous cult. Open communication is not a good way for them to accomplish their mission. I can't decide if they are deluded, stupid or evil. Probably a little bit of all three.

Majority of Americans are probably not Christians, huh? Well, good for them. Maybe when more of them stop believing in an omnipotent imaginary friend, they'll stop supporting all the creeps who make their livings representing themselves as God's spokesmen, and then the human race can make some real progress.
