Default Stephen Fry on Catholicism
I'm still trying to track down the context of this debate, but the question/resolution posed was "Is the Catholic church a force for good in the world?"

It makes for very interesting, intelligent viewing:

Can we name Stephen Fry Chief Enlightenment Evangelist?

What a well-reasoned, moving speech. He truly is a Renaissance man.

(Season 1 of his British tv series Kingdom is available on Hulu.)

I watched that a while back, C hitchens did a GREAT job. The scores before & after reflect how well they spoke.

That's it! All I could find were bits and pieces, including Hitchens' part which I haven't watched yet.

I'm actually looking forward to watching Ann Widdecombe make a fool of herself.

I believe the Roman Catholic Church was a force for good in the world prior to Vatican II.

Since then, not so much.

So the Church was better when it kept people in the dark through the use of the Latin Mass?

Question: do you actually believe the things you post here, or are you just looking for a reaction? (Yes, that's an honest question.)

I think the church was more in line with what's right than they are now, that's all I'm saying.

BTW the Tridentine Latin Mass is a very beautiful thing. I'm not Catholic, or even Christian, but like the mystery writer Agatha Christie, also a non-Catholic, I recognize a thing of great beauty and product of Western civilization and culture. I admire it the same way I admire classical music.

That's a truly amazing non-answer. Could you be less specific?

That's why I find its best to admire traditional religions from afar. The only real problem I have with Catholicism is their insistence on "obedience" to what a priest or bishop says. I like the idea of having an independent mind.

But the externals of their religion are (or used to be) pretty fascinating and attractive!
