But it IS radical. It is far and away the most remarkable part of the Gospels.

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for their is the kingdom of heaven."

No major religion had preached this. It is a revolutionary introduction.

"Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy."

This in the face of the merciless Romans? it is both a stinging criticism of the Caesars, one which could get you killed, and a call for gentleness in the face of the Roman harshness. There were a considerable number of people in Judea who wanted an avenging messiah, who would smite the Romans, and here was a man calling for meekness, and gentleness, and mercy, even to their tormentors. This was something completely unexpected.

"When thou doest thine alms, do not sound the trumpet before thee."

This is an astonishing call for humility, one that to this very day that many ministries ignore.

The Sermon on the Mont is a rebuke to all of us, particularly the arrogant and the powerful (and in fact, the people who would so grotesquely take out of context what Obama was saying).

And in fact, Mel, it should be a sharp rebuke to you, for your arrogance and ignorance and judgment and pride. The Christ who speaks the words in Matthew 5, 6, 7 and 8 would be saddened at your small minded ignorance and pride.

In fact, Mel, if you were not so willfully ignorant about everything farther away than the end of your own nose, you would realize that the notion of the Sermon on the Mount as a radical statement is a running current in Christian scholarship, thought, and teaching dating back centuries. A few easy to find examples:

The Sermon on the Mount, Fisherman Bible Studyguide Series, Gladys M. Hunt, Book - Barnes & Noble

I guess when your church teaches "GOD DAMMMMMMMMMMN AMERICA," that would add up.

Did you see the President of the USA mocking the bible?
would you like me to post 50 links to the contrary. Don't be a goof ball.

This is priceless!

Barack Obama gets it right and is then mocked by a painfully small-minded fundy--what a riot!

Because he is right--he has read his Bible. He knows his Christian tradition. There is a reason why Christians don't literally follow the Torah--and it has to do with the radical nature of the Sermon on the Mount.

Spectator I: I think it was "Blessed are the cheesemakers".
Mrs. Gregory: Aha, what's so special about the cheesemakers?
Gregory: Well, obviously it's not meant to be taken literally; it refers to any manufacturers of dairy products.

Calling Christianity radical is not a vice.

Not understanding the difference between "a vice" and "radical" is unfortunate.

Hi, Colin. Help me out. Is there an objective standard for something to be a “vice”? Or is it all purely subjective? IOW, a vice for me might be plus for another. Consider Hitler, for example. Was it wrong for him to murder people, or was he just trying to “purify” the so-called gene-pool? In short, was he doing good or evil?

You probably can guess my standard, but perhaps you would be willing to share your standard. If not, that’s okay, too. Only if you are willing.
