So I went for a walk with a friend (no dog with us) and we came across a guy walking what looked like a malinois I asked if it was and if I could pet her he said no she's a Mal-In-Noise and I could pet her, I was just like yeah it's pronounced Mal-in-wah And you probably shouldn't be owning this dog he responded with the typical "f!#* you" we just walked away. Point of the story is don't you hate when people can even pronounce the name of the breed they own.. Especially if they're going to own a dog like a malinois and not know something so basic as its name pronunciation that kinda scares me. Anyways rant over :-)
Omg that drives me nuts... they don't deserve that dog. Betcha they don't do anything with it either, except to make them look cool.

Reminds me of people who own GSDs but can't spell shepherd. ("sheppard")

That annoys the hell out of me too. People who shoulda stuck to pet rocks! 'Cause I know either of mine could spell it properly and they are dogs.

A relative breeds Dachshunds and pronounces it "Dash-hound" and probably can't spell it just going off of the norm for the person

Actually I've heard working Dachs breeders pronounce it Dash-hound before. (Dachs in question were bred for blood trailing)

I think it's pronounced "creepy hairless thing" but I could be mistaken.

I do love people who own something and don't know the proper pronunciation or spelling of the breed.

Craigslist ads really crack me up sometimes.

Dotsun, Sheppard or shepard. Doverman. Rockwilder. Chiwawa. Grayhound, Miniature Doberman, Miniature Greyhound etc.

My favorite is when people ask what Casper is. I say Dogo Argentino and they reply Dojo what? I swear 99 out of a 100 people will respond that way. I even asked at a Dogo event if maybe I wasn't pronouncing it right or maybe my accent, but no, people just can't grasp the name! My own father still calls them Dojo's!

Yeah, but can you say "Puyallup"? LOL

There are a lot of words I can't pronounce correctly. Doesn't mean I shouldn't own something because of it.
And as I remember my time in Everett, most locals call the state they live in ... WaRshington

Isn't Dachshund German? :P
Yes, which is why it isn't pronounced like that.
here I'm terrible at explaining

This dude explained it half decently

Living in Austria (German speaking) the actual way to pronounce it would be with the German "ch" sound which takes some time to perfect. It is kind of guttural sounding.
It doesn't sound anything like Dash-hound or Dash-hund.
The beginning sound (Da) is pronounced like it looks Dah. And then the guttural "ch" sound with an "s". Hund - hoond.
There is no real English equivalent for the "ch" sound. The closest would be Dahx-hoond. I hope somehow that makes some sense to somebody.
Dachs - badger Hund - dog.
And another bit of trivia: Hardly anyone in Germany or Austria calls it a Dachshund (even though that is where the name came from!). The common name here is either a Dackel or a Teckel. Dachshund - Definition and More from the Free Merriam-Webster Dictionary

This happens to me a lot with people that own Cane Corsos, and they pronounce it like its spelled. Drives me nuts!
I gave up trying to say it the right way, people look at me like I'm a retard until I say Kane corso.

Interesting.. that's how I pronounced it. :P But I have also taken a little German.

I did not know they where called Dackel or Teckel. That's interesting.

Another one that drives me crazy is Chihuahua. I notice a lot of people spell it how its pronounced. It took me a little while to get to where I could spell it. Basically all I did was 'Chi -Hooa-Hooa' Chihuahua XD I don't know how it clicked but it did with me.

Funny you mention that! Even though my bus route (pronounced root, btw) goes there;

I always get the pronunciation between Puyallup and Tulalip mixed up!

until I actually heard the name pronounced, I said "mal-in-oi" too. If someone who's never heard it pronounced correctly talks to someone else who's never heard it pronounced correctly they wont know they are pronouncing it wrong! Ive actually known someone who had never seen "chihuahua" written out before and they got all confused. They read it as chee-hoo-a-hoo-a!

If some of you remember a while back I posted my friends Beauceron puppy. Her family is on their second one and they kept pronouncing it "Boo-sir-on" and it was driving me nuts. I'd make a point to say it the proper way and they just looked at me funny. I admit, I've said names wrong in the past but since I've learned the correct pronounciation, I've corrected myself.
