I have not found a good flea treatment that takes care of the problem 100% and I have tried them all. I usually mix treatments. I will wash my Yorkies with fleas shampoo then add flea powder once they are dry. I use a flea color from time to time in extreme cases. I also use the drops that you place between the shoulders. I still find fleas from time to time. Sigh.

I am looking for recommendations on the best flea preventative for my two boxer dogs. I have tried several brands, and a few of the ones that use to work are no longer working, such as Frontline. Also, if anybody uses a homemade system, I would love for you to share it, so I could try it as well.
Thanks! |

I am in the same situation. I used to use the original Advantix brand because that's what was best for my dog. They changed it to Advantix 2 and it's horrible. It doesn't work at all. Now I'm trying to find something that works for more than 2 weeks. I think I may try the oral medication, Comfortis, but I need to talk to my vet about it. We are going for a check-up soon to see if my dog can be on it.

Are fleas bad in your area? I know fleas are pretty bad here this year. We usually don't get fleas but this year we've got them occasionally. I advocate chemical free treatments, such as food grade diatomaceous earth, flea combing, light traps, vacuuming, washing pet bedding, washing dogs in Dawn soap, etc. This is a really good article to read about fleas and how to get rid of them: http://www.richsoil.com/flea-control.jsp

We have had the most awful flea epidemic this year. The vet says people are having to treat their lawns! They also recommended we NOT buy Hartz brand flea drops, but I figured of course they'd tell us not to buy over-the-counter, because that only leaves their products! Well, it looks like they were just legitimately caring for our animals, because we used the Hartz brand drops and it didn't even put a dent in the problem. Not only that but it took an entire week for the product to dry, and it even seemed to irritate the skin of of one of our cats, who hid for around 2 days after we put it on her. Please don't use this stuff!
