I would like to surprise my mum with either a kitten or puppy, I'm leaning more towards kitten. She has a bad back so it can't be anything that would need lots of exercise (obviously with a dog, I and Greg would walk it). We have 2 cats and mum looooves them. What do you reckon, I would like to get her something as a companion. Which is why a dog came to mind too. Any suggestions?
The cat will be less maintenance for sure. However, the cat will probably become a little less social as it grows older. Your mother may not need a pet that wants constant attention, and if that's the case, I would say get the cat. I owned two cats, and as long as they are fixed and/or you choose to keep them inside, you really should not have any major problems.

Guess a dog would be more of a companion than a cat as they are far more needy than most cats. Perhaps a nice little one from a rescue, but which ever you get I'm sure your mum will love it.

I like birds. Would like to have one and tame the bird, not like some of the birds where they're stuck in a small cage for the rest of their lives.

Birds are very low maintenance in the sense of not needing to walk them and do things like that. They poop a lot so you need to keep an eye on that but they are very friendly and emotional creatures. They wear their hearts on their sleeve, so to speak, and other than being kind of annoying to some people are pretty easy to deal with for someone with back problems.
Birds would be great but my mum has an odd phobia of winged creatures lol. She is even scared of butterflies :/

My mom still talks about the Maltese she had. He died a few years ago from old age. She's in her 70s and while she enjoys my cat I know she'd really like another Maltese. We're hopeful that our family's life will get back on track soon and she'll get one. I think I've convinced her to go with a slightly older rescue.

I think a small breed dog would be great - perhaps an older one who doesn't need much in the way of exercise, double bonus of giving a dog a good home that might otherwise be stuck in a rescue for a long time too.

If we taught it to follow our command and also to fetch I'd take it for walks :P

First I would be sure wherever your mum is staying accepts cats or dogs. If she's in her own home, that works fine. Also, think about the long term maintenance. If she's on a fixed income she'll need a very low maintenance animal. I'd say a cat is a great option. They are very independent. Maybe consider getting her some supplies along with the pet so she's set up properly. That's a great gift and I'm sure she'll enjoy like she has the other 2 she's fond of.
She has the kitten now. I think it was a great choice. Although she tends to moan a little, she clearly really enjoys having a kitten around that is reliant on her. One of the other cats seems to have taken to staying up at a neighbours house, but this is because one of the other neighbours has recently got a little staffy, which resulted in their 3 ginger toms coming over to our garden all the time. The other cat enjoys being outside all the time too. So she gets the kitten to talk to and fuss over.

I think so that the small doggie will be perfect to establish a better understanding between two different different nature pets. Big dog can be harmful to the other pets and dog will be uncomfortable with the other pets. so I think puppy will be perfect choice.

WE got her a kitten in the end. I think the kitten has been more work than a puppy would have been lol.

Yeah...Molly sleeps in neighbours garden after getting sprayed on by 3 ginger toms that are not welcome in the garden. I am currently in the midst of war with them...the squirt on my stuff...they get water squirted at them. Also they attack my cats all because they have been shunned from their home.

Maltese are really good little companion dogs. Great nature, much easier to house train than some of the other toy breeds and their small size means they can get a lot of their exercise requirements from play so short walks will do. I also love little tea cup yorkies, I used to have a standard called Rodney and he was the loveliest lil dog in the world. Papillon(sorry not sure of spelling) are great to. They are a toy spaniel, my niece has one and she's lovely. Hard choice between a cat and a dog, dogs are more work but at the same time probably more of a companion, as their love is unconditional as oppossed to a cat who lived you when they feel like it lol, still love em tho
