Do your cats wear a collar or not? A friend of mine was recently quite shocked that mine don't wear collars. I went to the pet store and there were hundreds of types! Not just different colours- but different materials, some were stretchy, some had these clip fasteners and some had buckles, some had no elastic in them and some seemed all elastic, there were flea collars and some had bells on, some had tags - I was pretty overwhelmed so ended up coming home with nothing.
So do your cats wear a collar, if so, what type do you recommend? |

None of mine do. The injuries caused by collars (not the safety ones like the one Charun mentioned) are horrific. One cat at Shua was found with a massive injruy under her armpit (pawpit?). She'd struggled to get out of the collar and had her paw stuck. the wound was treated but it had damaged the lymph nodes and she developed cancer as a result and sadly had to be pts a while later. That's just one of the many horror stories I've heard about cats and collars, I'd never risk it with any of mine, they're too active and the danger of them getting it caught somewhere and the poor cat not being able to get free is too high.

No, they don't currently, but they have in the past. The one absolutely hates them and is miserable no matter what, but we kept a flea collar on her and then her name tags had a place to hang in case she got out. Well, she's gotten out before and it freaks her out. She doesn't like the feel of grass at all and just cried at the door until we let her back in, so I'm not too concerned with that any more, lol. I've never used purely decorative collars before either.

None of my cats have ever had a collar. We have a lot of trees they like to climb and I feel it would be too dangerous if the collar got caught and they choked or even the break away ones would mean they fell and even though cats usually land on their feet...I have seen/heard of cats landing on their sides/back and causing a lot of damage. Plus they would be walking backwards trying to get it off haha.

My cats absolutely wear collars. Where I live, if cat is found without a collar, animal control automatically takes it to the shelter, which is 30 minutes away. They will also fine you to cover costs. Even though my cats are indoor cats, they have occasionally skinned by someone and took off. I don't want to risk the fines or losing my animals so they have collars and ID tags.

My cat used to wear a collar with an ID tag in case he managed to escape (which he does at times), but a couple years ago, he had an allergic reaction to something and scratched the fur and quite a bit of skin off underneath the collar. Of course, I took the collar off him for awhile so it wouldn't irritate the wound. Once he healed, I tried to put it back on him, and a few days later, he'd scratched himself up again. I tried getting a new collar in case that was the cause of his reaction, and he did it again. So, no collar for him now.

None of ours have a collar and never have, knowing Drake he'd get himself tangled up in it somehow and Pretty and Dylan wouldn't let you put one on, plus we live at the foot of a mountain with a tonne of trees and Drake and Dylan I know like to climb them. They are all microchipped however so if they get lost can easily be traced back to us.

I have three cats, but only one of them actually wears a collar. Her collar is brown leather with a small brass bell. It's a bit humorous too, because she is the one cat that never strays too far from the house. Personally, I think collars are just very aesthetically pleasing. I like the way they look. The other two cats of mine have taken their collars off and lost them several times, so we usually don't try to make them wear one.

Even though my cat is totally an indoor pet, she wears a collar with a couple of tags. One tag has her name and my phone number. You never know when a pet will get accidentally lost. The other tag is her immunizations. She actually enjoys the tags and loves to make them jingle loudly. One of her nicknames, consequently, is Jingle-Butt.

Collars are a very useful tool tbh, my old cat got clipped by a car outside our house, problem is the bloke driving was in a rush to get home so couldn't go looking for the owners, he took homer the 50 mile drive to his home, got a et out etc. then used the collar to contact us.
Other times homer went for his walk, did it quite often here he wouldn't come home for days. And he got trapped in someone's she'd. The owners found him, fed him and called us up. |
