We had a cat called Cindy when I was a kid who was a bugger for bringing birds home. My dad tried allsorts to stop her including loading up her collar with bells and reflectors but she found a way around it. She would lie on a branch close to the ground and wait patiently until the poor unsuspecting birdie hopped underneath and then roll into them! Do you know if there is a nest in close proximity? seing as he's bringing babies.....it maybe an increased temptation not present in previous years? Apart from saying bad kitty when he does it though I don't really know of a deterant as its just part of their nature....poor birdies

I've tried bells on collars too but didn't find them much success. I used to put a lot of work into feeding wild birds and making my garden suitable for them but when I got my cats I had to stop doing that since it only encourages birds into the garden-of-death. I think the only thing you can do is make sure you're not actually encouraging birds into your garden, don't feed them etc and hope for the best.

I have a big problem with frogs right now! Cleo loves them and keeps bringing them in but she doesn't kill them, just releases them. I never knew how loud british frogs could scream until my cat decided to play with one, they make an awful racket then.

If you ever find a solution please let us know as Drake and Dylan bring in Sooo many mice, only the odd bird though thank god, I have at least three live mice loose in the house that I know of at the moment, think I ought to free range a snake to catch them lol.

Default Is there a way to stop a cat catching birds?
I have an outdoor cat, a 9 year old neutered male. He doesn't go out much but we do leave the windows open and he tends to go out on sunny days. He is usually a very lazy cat, but this year for some reason, more than other years, he has started bringing in dead birds. I tried putting a bell on him, but it doesn't seem to have made a difference, he is getting one a week at the moment, babies I think and he must be starting to dent the population a bit. Is there any other way than a bell that I can let him still go out but protect the birds? Something to deter them from my garden or to make them aware of his presence?

Appreciate any advice, is this a problem for other people?

One of Jens cats seems to not bother with birds. She prefers to go for small bugs that fly. generally eating quite a few of them before her session of bug catching is over too.

The other cat gets interested but is too lazy to chase.

And the kitten. Well she hasn't been outside yet. lol

I stop letting my cats outside. One of my cats was awful about catching things and bringing it into the house. I definitely have a problem with this, and it's not something that I really cared to deal with, so I just stop letting them go outside and that seemed to take care of the problem.

The bug one catches birds...next door stupidly have a bird table! She caught a huge pigeon once but we got it off her and took it to vets. Saved quite a few birds actually.

Not sure you can stop them. If you seem them watching them then make a loud noise to scare the bird and then tell them off. That's what I do and she hadn't caught one on a while...just bugs lol. She leaves them on the step for us too.
