Taffy - this was her shelter name and it seemed to be perfect for her as she is the sweetest cat I have ever met.

Skreea - I honestly don't know how this name came into my head but I liked the sound of it.

Mine are called Jack, Sparrow and Cleo. Cleo came with her name, but it suits her (I always think of Cleopatra - boss queen!), and she responds really well to her name. Jack and sparrow well... to my great embarrassment I named them after Pirates of the Caribean, because they were identical, and I thought the names were quite good cat names on their own. What I didn't know, is they were both girls (I thought they were boys!), but by the time I knew well... it didn't feel right to change them.

Mine are mainly named after alcohol. My first two cats (who've both moved in with a neighbour now) were Palinka (a Hungarian drink) and Ouzo. Then came Alize and Scrumpy (Scrumpy disappeared one day, I hope she's just found someone to live with who gives her lots of love and attention). After that I got JD and Hennessy, and then Zorro (breaking with tradition but he has a mask just like Zorro) and Koko (the proper name for the rum is Koko Kanu, I was going to name Zorro Kanu but Zorro was a better fit for him). Finally last year I adopted a kitten from an ex-colleague's daughter as her child was allergic to it (I did suggest getting rid of the child instead but that didn't go down too well!) and my friend and I named her Kuski after his favourite DJ. I was trying to stay with the alcohol theme but couldn't think of another name I liked!

Mine have mostly been named before I got them. My sister's cat is the only exception I can think of currently, which she got as a kitten and named Neko (meaning cat). When I was younger, I wasn't allowed to name the outside cats we had, but we always ended up sort of naming them anyway, so they'd have silly names like Big Kitty, Tupperware (she got her head stuck in a tupperware lid), and Carrot.

I am pretty dramatic and like unusual names so there is usually a story behind my pets names unless I adopted them already named.

My oldest cat is 7 and I named him Romeo mainly because I was sick of the dating world at the time and said he would be my "Romeo". My youngest cat I adopted as a very tiny kitten in 2010 and wanted a name compatible with Romeo so I went into Shakespeares play and read all the male names and they were just not appropriate and too long like Mercutio and Tybalt, when I remembered that "West Side Story" one of my favorite musicals is the musical version of Romeo and Juliet with Tony being the equivilent of Romeo.

Well Tony's best friend is Riff and that is my other cats name. He had a name when I adopted him of "Smoky" so because there is a musical connection with a "smoky Riff" meaning a run of music by guitar or sax that is bluesy....I guess his longish name is Smoky Riff.

That is pretty historically awesome, my nan did a similar thing and named her cat Juliet as she 'adopted' it after she left her long time husband.

My kitty's name is Baby. She was named by her first previous owner, who thought she was timid. But I call her Buddy because she's my little buddy. Also, she's a total badass so the name Baby doesn't really fit. She's defended her turf from other cats and even a raccoon. There's a grey tom that wanders the neighborhood and I call him Earl Grey.

One of my cats Hennessy has been nicknamed Ermintrude by a few of the neighbours because they think her black markings make her look like a mini-cow! Poor thing.

I have five cats but all except one have random names. The last one was named holly because she was dumped on my doorstep just before christmas but she had got out of her box. All that was left was the empty box, some cat food and cat litter. My daughter searched for hours and found her completely drenched under a holly bush. She was only about 12 weeks old.

Such a shame there are people willing to dump the poor creatures!!!!

My old cat was called Homer. I had another two called Derby and Minstrel.

We have Molly who is named that because when Austin Powers Goldmember came out, I was watching it with my neice and the 'Moley Moley Moley' bit made us laugh that we said it to the new cat (Molly) and kept her name as Molly but we have shortned it to Molls.
Then we have Lily...she was a teeny kitten so we called her little lily or tiger lily(as she punced on everything) and then obviously she got bigger so it was lils or lily loo and now its ninny noo, nins or boo boo pussycat. My mum does the baby voice on all of them haha.

Default Cat names
Tell me all about your cat names...

What is your cat called, and why? Is there a story behind it, or did you just think it was a cool name?

If you have another cat, do you already have a shortlist or any ideas for names?

I ask because I'm pretty sure I'll be getting another kitten soon as my friends cat has just given birth, and there is the most awesome little tortoiseshell, and I'm already thinking about names for her!

The cat I had for 16 years was named Molly Maguire because she was mostly black with a few white spots and reminded my mother of a coal miner, which the Molly Maguires were. Also my mother is Irish and the family has a long liberal Irish history. My grandfather was a Wobbly. So the name had a lot of significance. But, we just called her Molly.

I have a turtle now but want cats. I love cats. Just have to make sure they get along with the turtle. I've had the names picked out for years from a favorite sci-fi author. Pixel and Random. Pixel is a kitten who walks through walls because he's too young to know he can't. Random's full name is Random Numbers because he never stops running around and into things, leading people to believe his brain is made up of a bunch of random numbers. Some day I'll welcome Pixel and Random home, as soon as I find them.

I think my cat has the funniest name , with funniest story behind
When we adopted him, we didn't knew what name to choose. I liked Victor, but he didn't had that stateliness for this name. ..

The day after we adopted him, when we came back from work and entering the door, I think he got scared and he just lay on his back, with his pawns up, like an afraid possum, standing still, saving his life prom the ''predators''... He was hilarious ... And because we just have watched Ice Age few day before this situation, we called our little fellow Opossum ... he looks like Eddie also a little bit :-D

Naming your cat is the best part. Although I do not currently own a cat I have had a cat named "Cally" (she was a Calico cat) and a cat named "Raja" (named after a Disney movie). What kind of cat is she? How about Niko? Or, try to think of a name that means something of the personality of the cat. For an example, I named my dog Zoey which means "full of life". She is a very hyper dog.

Our cat was named "mika" by his original owner as they thought he was a "she" when it was still a kitty.
And so we still call him mika since he was already used to it but there are times we called him "mhic" as a nick name which sounds more male.
