Our cats do go out, the house backs onto the mountain so plenty of space to roam. We do have a road at the front but the only one I've ever seen out there is Pretty but she rarely goes far nowadays usually out the back door and back in the bedroom window. Dylan and Drake both love to go out and do whatever it is cats do when they're out. Dylan only has three legs but still climbs trees. Drake goes out in all weathers and loves to come in soaking wet and jump on you to rub himself dry.

I have 3 cats, one ventures outside for the day, almost all day, one is rather scared of a lot of things and is generally inside. The other cat, a kitten, is just learning to go to the toilet outside and he is loving it. All our cats venture out rather far and in the front near roads as well, they seem pretty safe when they are outside, they are wary of roads, usually.

My cat goes out on occasion but he's a bit of a bully. I live next to my parents and their cat is deathly afraid of my cat. Plus there are two neighbors with outdoor cats that my cat starts fights with. So I try to make sure he's only out when no one else is out and I'm out to keep an eye on him. He was a rescue from the shelter so I don't know his past but he is definitely a tough one

My cat stays indoors during winter, and is outdoors/indoors the rest of the year. She doesn't like the cold any more than I do. I have trained her not to wander into the neighbors yards. She really likes just laying out in the sun. She gets in and out through a window I leave open when its not cold. We've had a mild winter, so she's been out more than normal this season.

My cats all go outside. My garden backs onto other gardens so it's an enclosed space for them, and most of my neighbours are cat lovers so I'm not too worried about them. Obviously there's still risk of traffic accidents but so far (touches wood) they don't like to go round the front, I think they've got plenty to keep them occupied in various people's gardens so they tend to stay fairly close.

Our cat have all the freedom in the world. LOL
I have a cat door for him so that he could get out and get in anytime. He would not go far and just usually roam around our compound. He sometimes go to the roof and find some friends. But he can find some enemies too so he prefer more to stay at home and sleep a lot. |

Never! Since I have been adopting them from shelters both back in IL and AZ I even have to sign a paper saying they will be kept indoors. It is much healthier and safer and in some places like Enya said you can even shoot them. I believe in sheltering, babying and spoiling my guys and never let them out in the big nasty world.

I'd love to let my cat out but she's an indoor kitty and happy with it. She sometimes pokes her head out the window when I feed the birds but never attempts to jump out. Round where I live it's just not safe, got a bunch of idiots who hang around and like setting fire to things so I just decided not to take the risk. She's happy and safe and that's what matters to me.

Ooo good topic. Mine are bit of both, one would prefer to be an indoor cat but doesn't abide by the indoor rule and messes in the same place everytime so she has to be an outdoor cat at night time (with a box, a blanket and occasionally a hot water bottle all underneath the shelter of our front door). But she does it in teh day too so we have to always keep an eye on her because she just hates going outside and we don't have cat litter trays. The other cat likes to be outside but she is really dopey and she's my mums best friend so she has to be in at night but they both never leave the garden (or they go next door and attack the birds sometimes).

My cats are both indoor only cats. I've always been too scared that a coyote or other animal would attack them or they would get hit by cars. They seem happy enough to sit on every window of the house and also by the front screen door. I was thinking about harnesses for them too, but I can't even get them to wear collars. They rip them off.

I think if it was legal to shoot a cat on your property here I wouldn't let mine out for long. I only let mine out for a bit in the morning and a bit in the evening so they cant wander very far.
I had a cat go mission a few years ago but found her when she was spotted by a friend of mine 1 mile away. She had been missing for 8 months and was being fed by someone who felt sorry for her. They hadn't let her in the house so I took her back home. She is now 18 years old and doesnt leave the garden. |

We'll keep our cats in on bonfire night (think 4th of july), but other than that we let them out. In the winter 2 of them go out in the morning then promptly meow at the upstairs window when they want to come in, they act more like indoor cats I suppose then. And in the summer we leave a window open but get them in at night. If we were in a tight urban area we probably wouldn't let them have as much freedom, or if there were neighbors that complained or would shoot a cat on sight, but our back yard shares with a row of houses so they have a safe little area. There are a couple other cats in the area with similar freedoms. There are also 2 houses close by, one in opposite directions of us who feed strays and are proper cat lovers, so our neighborhood is pretty good for it really. We actually got worried last year when one of them wouldn't come when called (she always did). And it was just that she meow'd at next door until they let her in apparently and if we called for long enough they would open the door to let her back out. So I think the worst we've had to deal with so far is someone trying to steal pats.
On the other hand, a couple years ago one of the strays that our neighbor was feeding was hit and killed by a car. |

My cat is an indoor cat, but if the weather is nice enough, I let him out on a leash. We have a lot of strays in the area, and I always feel like I have to watch my cat so having him on a leash is just easier. He spends most of his time outside in the summer but doesn't meow to go out or anything. I am also afraid that my cat will get hit by a car so having him on a leash just helps me breath easier.
