We have a brita water filter in the kitchen. When ever I pick up the dogs' bowl to give them water I always use the filtered water. I figure it's there, I must have paid for it because I believe it's healthier and better tasting water, why not give my dogs the same luxury? A friend was at the house today and noticed this; gave me a hard time about spoiling my dogs and having to buy extra filters because of all the extra water.

Thought I'd see if anyone else does this, or am I the only one

I don't have filters but my dog has access to some of the purest water out there, he would prefer to drink out of a dirty puddle, it drives me crazy.

I'm pretty sure there's good nutrients or bacteria or something in tap water that things like Brita filters out.
Izzy will only drink toilet water, if she's thirsty she will cry at the bathroom door and jut sit beside it until I get fed up enough to go let her in there. Even though she always has a bowl of water.

I wonder if they can even tell a difference. I think I'll fill one bowl with tap and the other filtered and see if they have a preference.

We give my dog the water we drink which is filtered through the refrigerator. My mom lives next door in an in-aw apartment and she doesn't have a filter for her water; so she just uses bottled water...and when Veronica is there she gets the bottled water too.

Our water rusts everything it touches...so no one is going to tell me that that's good for anything to consume.

I would just tell your friend:

"Are you paying for the filters? No? Then STFU".

I myself, just go by the rule "if you don't know what is in your water (hasn't been tested) then don't drink it."

If I don't drink it, my dog doesn't get it either, although she would drink from a puddle too.

You can bet that if bad water effects your health, it will definitely effect a dog's health too.

We drink filtered water because we have well water and I know it is not pure.

I for some reason don't drink much water at home. But when I do I want the coldest most pure water possible. So we have a brita pitcher. That mean's the pitcher is really just for the dog's lol Why not? You never know what's in it.
About an hour away from us over 20 people's well's are contaminated with a chemical that is realeased from gas do to a gas leak near "no one" was aware of til it already spilled out 54,000 gallon's of gas.
Yet, I live in the city but who's to say my water can't get contaiminated? Also, why not give them the coldest water available?

My tap water is cloudy white, and comes from the Detroit and Rouge rivers as I found out in my annual water report.

So we all drink from the Brita pitcher. Cat, dogs and ferrets all seem to prefer it.

It takes me almost 2 months to use up a filter.

Rust occurs when moisture and air come in contact with ferrous material. The purest water in the world will cause rust. It has nothing to do with the purity of water. Dogs will drink toilet water, so I find it ironic that anybody would worry about tap water. Also be very careful about the amount of faith you put in those charcoal filter systems or even bottled water. Tests have shown in most cases it is not any better than the average tap water.

When your dog dies it won't be because he drank tap water.

Have you actually done a taste test by giving your ferret for example a bowl of both tap water and filtered water? Mixing them up and seeing if he actually prefers one over the other consistently and not randomly, or are you imposing an assumption based on what you as a human prefers?

I'm sure when Jazzy say's "rust", she is refering to heavy iron in her water. Which is horrid! No one here is saying they only give filtered water to their pet's, saving the filter as long as possible just for their pet's and forcing themselves to drink tap water.

I guess it depends where you live. I know in my home town of Mesa, AZ they add chlorine and flouride to the tap water. its healthy for humans but I dont know about dogs. However, our family dog (jack russel mix) Charlie lived to be EIGHTEEN years old, and he only ever drank that tap water.. so who knows lol. Obviously the water in Mesa at least is healthy for dogs. Sam and I both drink mexican tap water and we're both fine too!

Our water, like Jazzy, rusts things (like his nice stainless water bowl) so I started using the filtered water from our refrigerator and now he wont drink water from the faucet lol

We have well water and that's what we all drink here - it has a little iron in it, but not enough to taste it or make it orange. Sadie likes to drink out of mud puddles and the rain puddles that have set in the depressions of our asphalt driveway for a day or two, and she is healthy as a horse, so I don't spend much time worrying about her water quality. But if you want to give filtered water who cares, you're paying for the filters.

I don't drink pop and will buy a bottle of water if I'm out and want something cold to drink. This weekend I bought a bottle, I think it was Absopure brand. Just for the hell of it I read the lable and the water source was the municipal water source from Plymouth Michigan. Oh well.

Yup. Same with the dogs and cat. They only want filtered water with a splash of ACV. They'll drink tap or well water if that's all they're offered, but they will only drink a little of it and aren't as enthusiastic about it.

I need to budget about $2000 for some sort of additional purifying system before the water rusts/rots/ruins our copper pipes.

Not to mention it tastes like crap.

Say what you want, I'm not drinking it and neither is the dog.

and it even smells bad.
